We recently connected with Amber Hurt and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care and celebrating myself is very important to me. The simple phrase, you can’t pour from an empty cup is said so often but it really is true. My self-care is going to Trader Joe’s (or Trader Joey’s as I like to call it), Cooper’s Hawk, meditating, church, brunch, taking my little mental health walks and spending time with friends and family.
Looking back, taking care of myself was always something I made efforts to prioritize. There’s a misconception that self-care has to be expensive or luxurious and that isn’t the case. One day self-care can look like drinking enough water and the next day it’s going to an expensive restaurant. Self-care is about your SELF, so do what makes you feel good no matter how it may look to others.
When I feel good about myself and feel life is balanced, it helps me show up for work and my business feeling better. Everything about us as humans is interconnected whether we realize it or not. Sundays and Mondays are definitely my most productive days. When I don’t set up my Sunday right, the rest of the week is off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

One of her favorite things to do is brunch, hence the tagline brunch, travel, adult, repeat. When Amber is not fighting for her life with adulting, she is at a coffee shop, taking her little mental health walks or rewatching Insecure.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Having a supportive family – From day 1 my family has always been super supportive and encouraging. This helped me to be confident in myself, try new things, be bold and take risks. I’m grateful for this because you cannot pick your family, but I’m blessed to have been placed in one that is not perfect, but they are loving and supportive. I recognize that everyone doesn’t come from a supportive or loving home, so my advice then would be to find positive people to have in your circle. Everyone needs someone, we cannot make it through life alone so community is very important.
Becoming a student leader on campus – Most of the professional development and career training I have now that I do use on a day to day is from being involved on campus. I was a Resident Assistant, in Student Government Association, Orientation Leader, Homecoming Queen, Tour Guide, in clubs, etc. We did such in depth training to understand ourselves personally and I gained mentors that helped me navigate the professional world. Everyone is not fortunate to have experiences like this, hence my business The Adulting Queen trying to provide resources and inspiration to people to navigate life.
Leaving 2 jobs – If you told me I’d end up quitting two jobs later on in life while I was in school, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. Both times this was a really scary decision and I chose to leave each for very different reasons. What it reinforced to me is that sometimes we need to leave things or let them go to make space for new opportunities. I also was challenged to actually tell people how I was feeling and ask for help during this very difficult time.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
The ideal client would be someone actively seeking personal growth, wanting to develop life skills, and improve their ability to navigate adult responsibilities. They may have specific goals related to their personal and professional development, and they would actively work towards achieving those goals with the guidance of The Adulting Queen.
Currently you can book The Adulting Queen for speaking engagements and workshops through the website www.theadultingqueen.com and tune into the podcast Sippin’ Sunday on Apple & Spotify.
