Meet Amber Lee Connors

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Lee Connors a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber Lee, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I grew up very poor and came from a troubled, unstable home. I was raised by my single mother who did her best to juggle work, taking care of me and putting herself through college. She has always been a source of inspiration for me. She married when I was in elementary school, and unfortunately to a partner who was quite abusive. They eventually divorced which also put us back in financial hardship, since she was unable to work due to a myriad of medical conditions such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia.

Despite all of this she’s always encouraged me to follow my dreams and never pressured me into a ‘safe’ career path. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without her.

I think when you come from nothing and you’ve got nothing to lose, there is already a sense of knowing how low things can get. You can only build up from there. I know that I’ll always be able to take care of myself no matter what happens, even if that means a worse case scenario. I’ll be okay. I think that helps me not only take risks, but continue to persevere through any challenges that may crop up.

I don’t think I’d be nearly so patient and determined had I not grown up experiencing that type of instability and getting comfortable with it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a professional voice actress and voice director for Anime, Video Games, Commercials, Audiobooks and more. I’m also the CEO & Founder of Sound Cadence Studios – a boutique recording studio that specializes in providing premium services tailored to specific client needs.

We currently have two physical studio locations, one in Burbank, California and the other in Addison, Texas. Our services include Recording, ADR Recording, Casting, Directing, Localization & Script Adaptation, Audio Engineering, Audio Mastering / Mixing, 5.1 Mixing, SFX Design, Demo Reel production and more.

As someone who was born in Ohio, I firmly believe that location should not be a limiting factor in creative work. It’s important to me to cultivate a wide database of actors and talented team members that span across the United States, as well as Internationally.

My goal is to not only provide clients with the care and attention their projects deserve, but also to connect wonderful opportunities to as many talented individuals as I can.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, empathy and gratitude. It is so easy to get wrapped up in comparing yourself to other people, what their journey looks like and all the things you want to be accomplishing. I firmly believe that being grateful for every opportunity you get, navigating this industry with empathy and kindness, and being patient makes all the difference.

There are so many wonderful, talented individuals competing in the same space as you. There’s enough work for everyone and it doesn’t need to become a contest. It’s hard to know what’s going on in someone’s life beyond what they showcase on social media, or where they’ve come from.

Keep your head down, do your best with the work you’re given and be a team player with your peers. You’ll get to where you want to go in time – everyone’s journey is different and unique to them. Stay hungry, humble and keep working on your craft.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Dare to Lead by Brene Brown has been transformative. Leading from a place of vulnerability, rather than being guarded, has made a huge difference. The connection you can foster with others from this uncomfortable, but necessary place, is priceless.

Some other wisdom nuggets include:
– Encouraging tough conversations rather than avoiding them
– Truly listening, rather than trying to think of what you’re going to say next
– Knowing when criticism is constructive and valuable, and when it’s coming from those in the ‘cheap seats’
– Being vulnerable is an act of courage and bravery, and this is how real connection is fostered

I can’t recommend her books and talks enough!

Where do you get your work ethic from?

We’ve all heard the phrase “work hard, play hard,” but where does our work ethic
