We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Mayfield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Funny enough I can actually be pretty hard on myself and insecure at times, especially within my work. I just try to be as authentic as I can be. Being in an era of validation or judgement stemming from social media, it can be hard sometimes to showcase and share about projects that I have seen come to fruition. Telling it like it is or not telling anything at all. Sometimes I feel like people won’t understand my all – blood, sweat and tears – went into making it come to life. But overall my confidence comes from my Faith in knowing that everything I am and all that I do comes from someone greater than me. Honing into post-event or post-project “Me Time” helps me to rebuild my self-esteem when I feel depleted. Whether thats through much needed rest or time away with friends and family before I jump back into it, making sure I take care of what I need (mind, body + spirit) is essential to staying confident in what I represent.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello, my name is Amber Mayfield aka AmberMay, I am from Inglewood California and I own + run a design company called designsbyher that specializes in what we like to call [Spreading a little bit of Joy] by providing Floral – Event and Design services around the greater Los Angeles area. designsbyher started off as a passion project with a love of flowers and events and has stemmed into a bespoke design house that curates pieces, moments and spaces for clients that are as rare and unique as the projects we have the opportunity to take on.
To say I love what I do comes easy. I’m not saying the work is easy haha but thinking of those I have the luxury to work alongside with within the event design world – which is a tight knit community of many backgrounds and stories that I get to share and be a part of – is everything. Every project I take on with DBH is truly unique and I cherish how my clients push me to grow by expressing their ideas and needs that go beyond anything I’ve encompassed. These growth spurts and learning curves trigger me to create something that is 100% one-of-a-kind.
I started designsbyher due to an innate feeling of knowing I was a designer and artist but because I did not have a degree saying so finding employment in these industries were damn-near impossible. Quite frankly breaking the “box” that many industries and places of work tend to unnecessarily put on people which was essentially dictating my future. Staying open to the blessings that are being sent my way to bless others with is my happy place. Currently we are working on an interior design project and finding joy in new endeavors while merging our skills in floristry and events.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Believing. Believing in myself and knowing I have a greater purpose is what keeps me.
I also truly believe there is ALWAYS something to learn – from anyone. My favorite quote is “learn something new everyday”. It stays true if you are seeking to learn 🙂
Don’t stop believing (yes I’m corny asf) and keep seeking to learn.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I love to read and I have a few books I return to for encouragement.
Marianne Williamson “A Return to Love – Reflections on the Principles of A COURSE IN MIRACLES” is a great read for whenever I get frustrated with how things are going around me that are out of my control. To quote “I certainly don’t pretend to consistently achieve a loving perspective of every situation in my own life. One thing I’m very clear about, however, is that when I do, life works beautifully. And when I don’t, things stay stuck”.
A great read to push those who are thinking of taking the Leap of Faith and starting their own entrepreneurial journey is Shonda Rhimes’ “Year of Yes” which was the book I read that was a big sign for myself. A snippet is “There’s no way to plan. There’s no way to hide. There’s no way to control this. Not if I am saying yes to everything. – Yes to everything scary. Yes to everything that takes me out of my comfort zone. Yes to everything that feels like it might be crazy. Yes to everything that feels out of character. Yes to everything that feels goofy. Yes to everything”.
I am also reading Lalah Delia’s “Vibrate Higher Daily – Live in Your Power” as a start to my day with encouragement and mindfulness.
