Meet Amber Simon

We were lucky to catch up with Amber Simon recently and have shared our conversation below.

Amber, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

I’ve often been the only Black woman in the room, and at times, that experience can feel isolating. There are moments when speaking up feels daunting and being heard seems uncertain. Writing and creating Dear Society has been a powerful way to navigate that feeling. Through the blog and stationery line, I’ve been able to express my thoughts and ideas freely, which reminds me that my voice matters and that I am not truly alone. Creating a space for underrepresented voices has also shown me that sharing your perspective can resonate far beyond the room you’re in.

Along the way, I also found my confidence, realizing that I deserved a spot in that room. These experiences have taught me that effectiveness comes from leaning into my perspective rather than trying to fit into the majority. By building credibility through my work, taking initiative, and creating opportunities for myself and others, I’ve learned to make a meaningful impact even when I stand out.

Ultimately, being the only one in the room has become a source of strength. Dear Society reminds me that when I speak up, I am both seen and heard, and I can create space for others who might otherwise feel alone.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hi! I’m Amber, and I’m the creator of Dear Society.

While navigating my MBA studies and a career in advertising, I’ve always needed a creative outlet. Writing became a way to connect with others and explore ideas that matter. I tend to write about the challenges of society that we all face, and I’ve noticed that for minorities, those challenges often carry an even heavier weight. As a young Black woman, I’ve faced obstacles created by society, and Dear Society became both a space to process my thoughts and a platform to share my perspective.

What began as a personal outlet soon grew into a community and eventually a stationery line, fueled by my love for journals, notebooks, and planners and my desire to encourage women who look like me to be heard through their creative outlet. During the peak of COVID-19, shortly after George Floyd’s murder, my blog became an even more important outlet, allowing me to feel heard while creating space for voices that were often overlooked. Dear Society became more than a brand—it became a platform for underrepresented voices to be amplified through creativity.

Alongside building Dear Society, I’ve worked in advertising, helping major brands craft campaigns that genuinely connect with people in real life. Balancing creative entrepreneurship with a professional career has taught me how to turn vision into action, and I’m passionate about continuing to grow Dear Society while staying true to its core values: giving space to voices that often go unheard, supporting female entrepreneurs, and encouraging thoughtfulness and self-expression so everyone has the opportunity to be heard.

I’m especially excited to share our newest notebooks, now available on SHOPDEARSOCIETY.COM. Each notebook is designed to inspire creativity and thoughtful reflection. You can also explore our blog -dearsociety-blog.com, where I share my thoughts on society, creativity, and personal growth—giving you space to reflect, write, and connect.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey, there have been a few key qualities and skills I’ve gained that, in the long run, have had a huge impact on me and my future self. These are self-trust, faith, and the importance of community.
In order to achieve certain goals of mine, I had to have a true sense of trust in myself. With this comes a level of confidence that helps as well, but trusting myself to work hard and set attainable but aspiring goals was learned throughout my journey.
In addition to self-trust, my faith is something I’ve been practicing for a long time now. Regardless of your religious beliefs, I found it helpful to have faith in some higher being to fall back on and seek reassurance and guidance. Everyone’s journey will have some obstacles or challenges that may appear as a setback. However, I’ve noticed that my faith allows me to view these experiences without the negative connotation of a “setback,” but rather as a deeper learning lesson or a more profound understanding.
Lastly, your community is one of the most important factors in where you end up in your journey. I found it crucial to surround myself with people who lift me up, who support me, and who advocate for me during my journey. I also found it important to have individuals in my community who have already achieved similar goals that I aspire for. This is important so I can learn from them and their mistakes.
For anyone early in their journey, keeping these three qualities and skills in mind will make your journey more fulfilling. While these things are important to keep in mind, the most important aspect of a journey is to enjoy it to the fullest. The ups, the downs, everything.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

One of my highest recommended books to read for self-development is The Power of Now, written by Eckhart Tolle.
This book is one that I have reread time and time again because of the valuable nuggets of wisdom.
From this book, I have learned that the mind finds comfort in being in the past or the future. This causes us to worry or revisit past events rather than living in the moment, “the now”. Keeping this in mind throughout my self-development journey has been crucial as someone who tends to worry about uncontrollable situations. Being in the now also allows you to experience peace as your mind settles. It is a constant effort, but definitely worthwhile.
