Meet Amber Thomas

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amber Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amber below.

Hi Amber, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

As I’ve transitioned into my 30s, I’ve noticed that my approach to self-care has significantly evolved. I’ve become much more intentional about nurturing my mental, physical, and emotional well-being. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that self-care is not a luxury — it’s a necessity. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the resources and tools readily available to support their well-being. Whether it’s through personal practices or utilizing services provided by your employer, prioritizing self-care has transformative benefits.

Some of my most effective self-care methods include journaling, exercise, meditation, vision casting (commonly known as creating a vision board), and attending therapy. Interestingly, as I’ve grown older, I no longer view therapy as a form of self-care but rather as mandatory life maintenance. I’ve conditioned myself to attend my sessions regularly, not because something is wrong, but because it helps keep me grounded and clear-minded. Having a non-biased ear to listen — even if it’s just to vent — has been extremely helpful, especially during moments of loneliness or when I simply need clarity.

Recently, I took my self-care journey a step further by joining a health group offered through my employer’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). I’ve realized that many companies offer these types of resources, yet they are often underutilized. I strongly encourage anyone who is unsure of what resources are available to them to ask their manager or HR department about EAP services. These programs are often free of charge and can provide a wealth of support for mental health, financial wellness, physical health, and more.

In addition to the methods I mentioned earlier, I’ve also discovered other meaningful ways to practice self-care, including:
• Taking vacations — Whether it’s a full vacation or a weekend getaway, allowing yourself time to unplug and reset is crucial.
• Regular health check-ups — Staying on top of your physical health is just as important as nurturing your mental health.
• Spa days or at-home pampering — This doesn’t have to be extravagant; something as simple as a face mask or a long bath can make a huge difference.
• Taking vitamins or supplements — Supporting your body with the right nutrients is key to maintaining overall health.
• Reading a good book or engaging with an interesting article — Feeding your mind with new knowledge or inspiration is also a form of self-care.
• Spending quality time with friends and family — Community and connection can do wonders for your mental and emotional health.
• Taking a walk or getting fresh air — Moving your body, even in small ways, can clear your mind and improve your mood.
• Getting adequate rest — Never underestimate the power of a good nap or a full night’s sleep.

One of the most profound realizations I’ve had is that the more intentional I am about my self-care, the better I feel overall. I’ve noticed that when I prioritize myself, I show up in the world as a kinder, more productive, and more level-headed version of myself. Additionally, I’ve discovered that the clarity of thought I experience through consistent self-care has significantly helped me manage my dyslexia. This has made me wonder about the potential positive impact self-care can have on individuals managing conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. The mind-body connection is powerful — when you feel good internally, it often reflects externally.

As I step into 2025, I’m looking forward to exploring even more ways to enhance my self-care regimen and, in turn, sharing those insights with others. My hope is that anyone reading this is inspired to be more proactive about their well-being. After all, taking care of yourself is one of the greatest acts of self-love — and you deserve it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

HR is My Passion, and My Future is Bright!
Human Resources has always been more than just a career for me — it’s my passion. I’ve found deep fulfillment in being an advocate for people, fostering positive workplace cultures, and helping organizations navigate complex people operations. Every day, I’m inspired by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of employees and contribute to the overall success of the company. What excites me most about my future in HR is the unlimited potential for growth, both personally and professionally. As I continue to evolve in my career, I look forward to expanding my knowledge, taking on new challenges, and ultimately helping shape the future of HR.

Recently, I had the honor of being published in the Madison Graph for an article focused on winning and advancement in life. This achievement was especially meaningful to me because it aligned with my belief in continuous growth and resilience — both of which are values that drive my work in Human Resources. Being recognized in this capacity has only deepened my commitment to encouraging others to pursue their goals, embrace opportunities, and strive for success in every facet of life.

As I look ahead, I’m excited about the many possibilities in store for my career in HR. My passion for people, coupled with my drive for professional excellence, keeps me motivated to keep learning, growing, and ultimately making a difference. I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, and I know that the best is still yet to come.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

As I reflect on my life journey, there are three qualities that have been most impactful in shaping who I am today: faith, tenacity, and agility. Each of these traits has played a critical role in helping me navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and continuously evolve — both personally and professionally.

Faith has always been my foundation. It has kept me grounded during uncertain times and has propelled me forward when obstacles seemed insurmountable. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is to never give in to limiting beliefs — whether they come from within or from the world around me. I’ve discovered that when I truly believe in myself and remain rooted in faith, I can overcome anything. Faith reminds me that my journey is purposeful and that my dreams are always within reach, no matter how distant they may seem.

Tenacity has been my driving force — a gift I wholeheartedly attribute to my mother and late grandmother. Watching them navigate life’s challenges with grace, determination, and unyielding strength shaped my understanding of perseverance. They have been incredibly effective change agents, not only within their own lives but also within the lives of those around them. Their example taught me that resilience is not just about enduring difficult moments, but about rising stronger each time. Because of their influence, I’ve learned that success is not born from comfort but from the ability to keep pushing forward, even when the odds are against you. Their unwavering determination instilled in me a mindset that no matter what comes my way, quitting is never an option.

Agility has allowed me to embrace change and remain adaptable in all areas of my life. Life is rarely linear, and my ability to pivot, adjust, and stay resilient through transitions has been a game-changer. Whether it’s navigating career shifts, personal changes, or unforeseen challenges, agility has empowered me to keep moving forward — not with fear, but with confidence. I’ve learned that flexibility is a strength, and my willingness to embrace the unknown has often led me to some of my greatest opportunities.

Together, faith, tenacity, and agility have been the cornerstones of my success and personal growth. They’ve taught me that with belief in myself, unwavering perseverance, and the ability to adapt, I can conquer any challenge and turn my dreams into reality. As I continue to grow and evolve, I remain committed to living by these principles — knowing that my best is always yet to come.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

The Most Influential Book in My Life

Over the years, I’ve read many powerful and transformative books that have shaped my mindset and approach to life. Books like Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks, and Power Moves by Sarah Jakes Roberts have all provided me with valuable insight on success, manifestation, and personal growth. However, above all of these books, the Bible has been the most influential and transformative guide in my life.

What sets the Bible apart from any other book I’ve read is its ability to speak directly to my spirit — offering not just practical wisdom, but divine guidance. The Bible has taught me the power of faith, reminding me that nothing is impossible when I lean on God. It’s reinforced the importance of patience and endurance, especially during seasons of uncertainty. Verses like “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26) have encouraged me to stay diligent in my pursuits, while “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) has fueled my confidence when I felt incapable.

The Bible has also played a critical role in shaping my perspective on purpose. In a world that often pressures us to chase material success, the Bible has consistently reminded me that my ultimate purpose is tied to service, integrity, and the impact I have on others. It’s taught me that true success is not simply measured by accomplishments but by the value I bring to people’s lives. This perspective has helped me approach my career, relationships, and personal goals with deeper meaning and intention.

While I am grateful for the knowledge I’ve gained from personal development and success literature, nothing has compared to the life-changing wisdom I’ve drawn from the Bible. It has taught me how to lead with love, persevere through adversity, and maintain unshakable faith in my purpose — and for that, it will always remain the most influential book in my life.
