Meet Amber Upchurch

We were lucky to catch up with Amber Upchurch recently and have shared our conversation below.

Amber, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I discovered my purpose after having my first baby. Birth and postpartum completely blindsided me; it was more overwhelming and transformative than I ever imagined. The support I received from my doula carried me through, and I knew I wanted to give that same support to others. That experience led me to become a birth doula and create Orion Birth, my private practice, where I now walk alongside families and empower them through their birthing experience.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

At Orion Birth, I believe everyone deserves an empowering birth experience. As a doula, I support families physically, emotionally, and with informational guidance through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I offer belly binding, nourishing postpartum recipes, engraved birthing combs, and digital resources, and I’m currently developing a childbirth education series launching in 2026. Orion Birth has grown into more than a practice; it’s a creative brand honoring the birth and postpartum journey. Alongside this work, I also write children’s books; my second title, Christmas in the Garden of Eaten, will be released this fall!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, drive, and follow-through. Resilience has allowed me to keep going even when things feel overwhelming or uncertain, which is especially important in birth work and in entrepreneurship. Drive keeps me focused on my goals; I’ve always had this inner fire that pushes me to move forward. And follow-through is what turns ideas into reality. When I say I’m going to do something, I make it happen.

I’m still early in my journey, but what I’ve learned is that if you feel called to do something, you cannot wait for the perfect timing. Take the leap, stay consistent, and keep moving forward. Progress comes from showing up again and again, even in small ways. My advice to anyone starting out: trust your resilience, harness your drive, and follow through. That combination will carry you farther than you think.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, the first thing I do is pause and take a step back. Birth work and entrepreneurship can both be intense, so I’ve learned the importance of grounding myself. For me, that often looks like writing to process what I’m feeling, working out to clear my head, or simply being kind to myself. Sometimes that means going for a walk, grabbing an iced latte with whole milk, picking up chocolate covered pretzels, or treating myself to a massage or pedicure. I’m all about self-care and finding small ways to recharge.

My advice is to recognize that overwhelm is part of growth, not a sign of failure. Slow down, focus on one step at a time, and remember you don’t have to do it all at once. Consistency matters more than perfection.
