We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ambrose Wilson-Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ambrose, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
### **Survey Response: Where Do You Get Your Resilience From?**
I used to believe that resilience was just about toughness—gritting my teeth and pushing through challenges. But life after college quickly showed me otherwise.
I had done everything “right.” I played college football, joined a fraternity, volunteered in my community, and graduated with two degrees. I thought that success would follow naturally. Instead, I found myself living in my mom’s basement, working a minimum-wage job, and feeling lost. I had bought into the vision of the American Dream—get a degree, land a great job, and build a stable life. But when that dream didn’t materialize, I felt embarrassed, stuck, and unsure of my next move.
The turning point came early in my career as a personal trainer when a client asked me a simple but powerful question: **“What’s next?”**
I didn’t have an answer. But in that moment, I realized I needed to start thinking differently. I had used a growth mindset in sports and academics, but I had never applied it to life. So, I stopped waiting for opportunities and started creating them. At 24, I took a leap of faith and started my own business.
That experience taught me that resilience isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about adaptability, emotional regulation, and self-care. It’s about learning, adjusting, and finding ways to move forward, even when the path isn’t clear. Today, I coach others to build resilience in the same way—not through sheer grit, but through mindful presence, self-awareness, and intentional action.
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about growing through adversity. And that’s a lesson I carry with me every day.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The Three Most Impactful Qualities in My Journey
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: adaptability, self-awareness, and strategic action.
These have shaped how I navigate challenges, build resilience, and create meaningful impact.
1. Adaptability: Learning to Pivot Without Losing Purpose
Life rarely unfolds the way we expect. I went from being a collegiate athlete with a clear structure to navigating uncertainty post-graduation. What kept me moving forward was the ability to adapt—learning to adjust my mindset, embrace change, and find new ways to apply my skills.
Advice:
-Develop a growth mindset—instead of seeing obstacles as roadblocks, view them as opportunities to develop new skills.
-Be open to non-linear progress—sometimes your path will take unexpected turns, but every step teaches you something valuable.
-Practice situational awareness—learn to assess when to push through and when to pivot.
2. Self-Awareness: Understanding What Drives and Limits You
At one point, I felt stuck because I was chasing a vision of success that wasn’t truly mine. Once I developed self-awareness, I was able to redefine what success looked like on my own terms. This meant recognizing my strengths, acknowledging my limitations, and aligning my actions with my core values.
Advice:
-Take time to reflect on what truly matters to you—not just what society, family, or peers expect.
-Learn to observe your emotions and reactions—they often reveal deeper insights about what’s working (or not) in your life.
-Seek honest feedback from mentors, coaches, or trusted friends to gain new perspectives on your growth.
3. Strategic Action: Moving with Intention, Not Just Hustle
Hard work alone isn’t enough—it has to be purposeful. When I first started my business, I made a lot of mistakes by focusing on just working harder instead of working smarter. The game changed when I started setting clear goals, learning from those ahead of me, and making intentional, strategic moves.
Advice:
-Prioritize action over perfection—you don’t have to have it all figured out to start.
-Invest in skills that move you forward—whether it’s learning business, communication, or emotional intelligence.
-Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you—mentors, coaches, and peers who keep you accountable and push you to grow.
Final Thoughts
For those just starting their journey, remember: success isn’t just about grinding—it’s about adapting, knowing yourself, and moving with intention. The sooner you develop these skills, the sooner you’ll start seeing real progress—not just in your career, but in life as a whole.
