We were lucky to catch up with Amelia Hopfensperger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amelia, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I like to always keep discovering new facts, ideas, and fun things about life. This allows me to stay curious and want to know more. Naturally, this sparks creativity in myself to take an idea that I learned and make something to add to it. When it comes to writing poetry, for example, I learned about robins and other birds through a board game called Wingspan and this motivated me to write a poem about what robins are like. All in all, I love learning new things and discovering new interests!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Outside of classes, I love learning new board games, being in the outdoors, and making memories with family and friends. I am very close to my family, so whenever I can spend time with them, I try to take in as much of it as I can. This is what drives me most of the time. Similarly, nature is all around us and it won’t be as beautiful as it is forever. Every time I have a chance to be emersed in the natural world, I am continuously amazed and in love with its beauty. I use these ideas to fuel my songwriting, story writing, and any other art I create. I am always looking for new opportunities to get my art out into the world, but as a full time student, it is hard to find the time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Stay curious, don’t be afraid to fail, and get yourself out there- spend time with people with the same interests. I think it is important to try to make connections with people in a similar field as you because it helps you in all areas of creativity. Especially with critiques and hearing other voices and opinions.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They always leave space for me to express myself and try new things. They are parents who allow me to experience amazing things about the world. My dad helps me with my music creativity and my mom teaches me how to be brave. I love them.
