Meet Amère Blackwell

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amère Blackwell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Amère , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
From and early age I was a determined child, anything I set my mind to I did. My mom was a big influence on my attitude, as she always told me “just keep going, it gets better”. I always found people I looked up to and didn’t quit until I was working with them. Maybe it’s a supernatural spark I was born with, maybe it’s autism. Either way it completes me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an Actor and Musician. From and early age I LOVED performing. My earliest performance was a living room ‘Dancing With the Stars’ remake I did with my brother when I was 4. Yes, we reversed every day, and Yes, there were costumes (maybe a VHS tape somewhere). Nothing else felt the same as getting up in front of people and sharing my creations, Dances, Songs. You name it, I did it. As the years progressed, I got proper training and refined my skill. I found myself most at home on stage, Acting or Singing. I studied at the Flint School of Performing Arts and was awarded scholarships based off my merit and dedication. I’ve never limited myself to what I can do, and tried to keep the child inside alive!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Confidence, discipline, and dedication. A career in the Arts is not for the weak. When you step onstage, you open yourself up. Some will like it, some won’t. Having confidence helps to receive that info in an analytical way, My dad always said “Haters will be more honest than your friends. If something hurts from being said, see if there’s some truth in it”. Ive always taken that approach and its helped grow. Discipline and dedication go hand in hand. You cannot grow something you don’t water every day.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They were always brutally honest. I was never given false praise. I remember being 8 years old and I sang for my mom and I asked her how I did, she responded ” you’re doing a good job for just starting out, but do you think you have from to grow?” “yeah” “then keep working at it! there’s always room to grow!”. She was honest and encouraged me, as I kept trying I improved and continued my journey. It helped me to grow a thick skin and just keep growing!
