We were lucky to catch up with Ami Burl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ami, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Overcoming writer’s block has been one of the most difficult challenges in my life as a writer. When I began working on my book, Words of Wisdom, back in 2015, just a few years after my father passed away in 2012, I would write a little, stop, walk away from it, and then try again. The emotions were heavy, and the process felt overwhelming at times.
What truly helped me move past that block was my faith. My belief in Christ grounded me and gave me the strength I needed to keep going when it felt overwhelming. I realized that this book wasn’t just a tribute to my father, it was something bigger. It was about the Father. That shift in understanding changed everything for me. It helped me write with greater purpose, clarity, and peace.
For me, overcoming writer’s block wasn’t about forcing creativity. It was about grounding myself spiritually, giving myself grace, and allowing God to guide the process. Once I embraced that, everything changed.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the owner of LA-Ink Publishing, a multimedia consulting firm where I help people find confidence in their own voice. A lot of the work I do centers on helping individuals overcome imposter syndrome through public speaking, communication coaching, and storytelling techniques. I’ve learned through my own journey as a journalist, broadcaster, and now an author that our stories are often the very thing that unlock healing, not just for ourselves, but for others, too.
What excites me most about what I do is watching people evolve. When someone realizes that their story matters and that they have the power to tell it in a meaningful way, it’s transformative. As a journalist, writer, and author myself, I understand how essential storytelling is, not just professionally but personally. It’s a pathway to healing, confidence, and connection.
I recently released my book Words of Wisdom: A Message From My Father, which is deeply personal to me. I started writing it back in 2015 after losing my father, and finishing it became a journey of faith, healing, and learning to trust God more sincerely. The book is now available on Amazon and all major platforms, and it’s my hope that it brings encouragement to anyone walking through grief or looking to reconnect with God.
I also have another book, Get the Grants, which helps people strengthen their storytelling skills within the grant world. Both projects reflect the heart of what I do, using communication, faith, and storytelling to empower others.
At LA-Ink Publishing, everything I create or teach is rooted in purpose. My goal is to help people grow in confidence, share their stories boldly, and move forward in what God has called them to do.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back on my journey, especially the process of writing Words of Wisdom, there are three qualities that made the biggest impact on my growth.
First is experience: I always say, “experience is a teacher,” because it truly is. I’ve always believed that you can’t truly pour into others if you haven’t lived through some things yourself. The ups, the downs, the moments that make you stop and question everything, those are the lessons that eventually turn into wisdom. And in my case, those experiences helped me find my voice and the message God wanted me to share through this book.
Second is education: Education has been a huge part of who I am. Education comes in many forms, and I believe in educating yourself every single day. Whether it’s formal schooling or self-guided learning, knowledge equips you to uplift others, to help someone move forward, overcome a challenge, or simply see what’s possible. Education strengthens your voice and expands your impact.
And lastly, perseverance: Never giving up and staying focused on what God has called you to do is essential. When you’re walking in your purpose, your work isn’t just for you; it’s meant to serve the community. That calling deserves to be answered with commitment and courage.
As for advice for those who are still early in their journey, I would say this: Continue educating yourself. Learn in the ways that suit you best. Grow your skills, explore new tools, and stay curious. Technology, even AI, can be helpful, but remember that you are the source. AI is simply a resource. Use it as a tool to support your voice, not replace it.
And most importantly, keep pressing forward. When you hear “no,” let it inspire you to push harder. Keep your eyes on your purpose and trust that every step, even the challenging ones, is moving you closer to where you’re meant to be.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to let me be myself and always encourage me to succeed in whatever I pursued. I’ve tried so many different paths in life, explored so many subjects, and through it all, my parents were always there, supporting me, cheering me on, and encouraging me to give my best. Having that kind of grounded support makes all the difference. It gives you the confidence to take risks, to grow, and to keep going, even when things get challenging.
They also taught me how to love the Lord. They introduced me to Christ, not just through faith at home, but through prayer and a spiritual foundation that shaped who I am. I am forever grateful for that guidance and for the way they supported and encouraged me when nobody else did. Their love, faith, and encouragement continue to inspire everything I do, including writing Words of Wisdom.
