We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amie Barsky a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. How did you develop your confidence and self-esteem?
This is one of my favorite questions!
Confidence is not something you’re born with, in my experience, and for most of my clients, it’s a practice and in some ways a skill set.
There are 2 simple steps in learning how to become “more confident?”
Step ONE: be willing to step into the unknown, to take a risk, even with all the fear, the doubt and uncertainty. Choose to take a step forward despite what your ego is whispering, (this crazy, you’re gonna f-up, you’re not good enough…) The only thing holding you back is you- DO IT ANYWAY.
People usually try to work on their “mindset” first, and to some degree, that makes sense. However, when you actually leap before you are “ready” and you realize you didn’t “die” (when you applied for that job, told someone you loved them first, asked for that raise, moved to a new town, changed careers, dyed your hair black). What happens is your nervous system begins to learn a new way of being. You’re retraining the body to learn that it’s ok to take the leap before you’re ready.
Step TWO: repeat step one EVERY DAY. Yup, consistency is crucial. Self trust is what we are up to when it comes to developing confidence. Choose an activity that stretches you a little out of your comfort zone, and commit to doing it every day. This daily practice will start rewiring the new programming of “I can do it, even if it feels scary” Commit, be true to your word, honor your commitment everyday and you will notice the shift.
Keep practicing, over and over- keep choosing from your True Self, not the parts of you that keep you playing small in life. (inner critic, perfectionist, people pleaser) the more you practice the easier it gets to access your self confidence because you are also deepening your self worth, you self esteem and that builds internal trust in your body.
This is how I built and continue to build my confidence and self esteem. Full transparency, as I’m sitting here sharing this my ego is whispering all kinds of nonsense in my ear (this is a dumb answer, people are going to judge you, blah, blah, blah….) The practice is literally CHOICE! I could choose to listen to the parts of me that are scared to be seen and stop sharing, or I could choose to take a deep breath, turn my ego down, turn my light, my voice and my “why” up and continue.
Well, since you are reading this you know what I chose 🙂 The ego is a part of this human experience. Accept it, but don’t let it stop you.
(I said it was simple, not always easy)
Please tell our readers about what you do, what you feel is most exciting or special about it, as well as anything else you’d like folks to know about your brand/art/etc. If relevant, please also tell our readers about anything new (events, product/service launches, expansion, etc)
The harsh reality is that women have been taught to lead their lives, family and careers from a “do more” attitude. What excites me is that I’m here to change this paradigm. Many of my clients have successful careers, but are exhausted from the “gotta hustle, people please and push through it” mentality. This kind of mentality disconnects them from themselves, their loved ones and their dreams, while driving them right into anxiety, overwhelm and burnout.
Unfortunately this has been accepted as the “normal” way of life. However, things are quickly changing. We know now more than ever before that our nervous system is the key to our health and success on every level. I am extremely grateful to have worked with some of the best trauma & nervous system coaches out there to support my own healing journey which has led me to the work I do today.
As a Trauma informed Nervous System coach and Breathwork facilitator, it’s an honor to support women in redefining what leading a full life can feel like, away from the rigidity of what our culture has taught us. Resetting the nervous system to trust that it’s safe to slow down, to experience more joy and ease among all the “LIFING” that’s happening. Reconnecting with their voice, their energy and fully owning their self worth, is absolutely priceless. It’s invigorating to guide women to create a balance in all areas: within themselves, their career and relationships. One that is actually sustainable without sacrificing their mental, physical and emotional health.
The greatest gift I’ve ever given myself is the gift of support- it was such a relief to know I didn’t have to go through it alone anymore. If this sounds like something you’d like to know more about, there are 2 ways you can work with me. A 4 week series of customized 1:1 Breathwork sessions (includes coaching) or enjoy a Deep Dive Reset: a 1:1 coaching program that is personalized and completely tailored to fit to your exact needs to reset your nervous system. My intention is to continue guiding women all over the world towards healing. Giving them the tools and techniques to get to know their mind and body and fuel them with self empowerment, so they can move through life with as much ease and grace as possible.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I thought about sharing my skills, education and expertise and then I paused and sat with what’s under that- what really impacted my journey. Beneath all the external things there is always an underlying internal energy. The energy of how we show up in all areas of life, (family, partner, work) affects everything. So I decided to share this instead.
I’ve always been tenacious. When I wanted to experience something in life, whether it was to travel, my education, adventures, my health or career changes, it didn’t matter what it took. If my soul had a feeling, I moved in that direction and “made a way out of no way” for it to happen. I’ve never been one to give up on what I desired.
This led me to resourcefulness- there is never only ONE way to do something. If your soul knows, then trust there’s a reason for that internal knowing and follow it.
I go the extra mile- most people in this world only do the bare minimum, just enough to get by, when you go the extra mile you’ll stand out above the rest and you’ll succeed with integrity.
My advice is to commit to being a student of life. Stay open to learning and be ok with getting messy, your greatest growth is way outside your comfort zone. Be willing to receive feedback so that you can grow from each experience.
Stop waiting to be “ready for the perfect time” you never will be ready and there will never be a “perfect time.” Be inspired by others without comparing yourself to them. Set high intentions for your goals and low attachment to the outcome. Lastly, take chances, listen to the inner knowing guiding you, even when you don’t have it all figured out. DO IT ANYWAY and find out!
Are you looking for folks to partner or collaborate with? If so, describe the sorts of folks you are looking to collaborate with and how they can connect with you if they are reading this and want to collaborate.
As a firm believer that we aren’t meant to experience life’s challenges alone, I am a huge advocate of creativing collaborations and partnerships with small businesses all the way to corporate companies. As an experienced breathwork facilitator and trauma informed Nervous System Coach, I am committed to guiding and supporting as many people as possible to maximizing their potential in all areas of life.
A common symptom I see from my clients with successful and demanding careers is that they all experience high levels of overwhelm, anxiety and burnout, because they are operating at such a fast pace. This leaves them feeling disconnected from themselves and their careers.
Through breathwork and personal development workshops, I help people get fast and effective results which includes:
Releasing stress
Decreasing anxiety
Reducing overwhelm
Increasing focus and productivity
Improving creativity and emotional wellbeing
Integrating these practices can be extremely powerful in the working environment to help cultivate and support team morale, workplace satisfaction, and ensure employees are at peak performance. This in turn creates a more positive work culture, and increases innovation and motivation as well as reducing workplace absence.
Are you interested in educating and empowering your employees with the tools to achieve their full potential? Send me a message hello@amiebarsky.com and we can schedule a call to discuss a trial period with your company, in addition to answering any questions you may have.
