We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amish Darr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amish, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience, to me, stems from an ability to embrace life in all its complexity—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It’s about navigating storms with the wisdom and strength to not just survive but savor the process. I find joy in challenges, often more than in the victory itself. My creative spirit refuses to accept limitations. When life offers an “either-or” choice, I always look for the “and.”
For example, life recently handed me a decision: buy a home for my parents in West Virginia or buy one for myself in New York, where I needed to be for my upcoming art show, Zero, in Brooklyn Heights. Instead of choosing between the two, I made both happen. I transformed a 1993 Chevy van into a tiny home, bought my mother her dream house, and drove that van to Brooklyn, where I now live while promoting my show.
During this time, I parked near Gleason’s Gym, one of the best professional boxing gyms, and balanced my days between working on my show and training for my next project—a performance centered around a boxing match.
Resilience, for me, is about reveling in the journey, dreaming bigger than anyone imagines, betting everything on yourself, and enjoying every step of the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I believe the best description of what we do was perfectly captured by Interior Design Magazine: “HXS is an art collective aimed at solving complex global conflicts through creative collaborations.” My own spiritual journey serves as the foundation for our philosophical art shows. Much of what I present to the world is shaped by my personal experiences, offering honest and unbiased conclusions. Yet, there are always questions I don’t have answers for. In those moments, I trust the universe, which has graciously revealed answers to me in a process of profound revelation. My role is simply to be patient, to trust that the insights will come, and then to weave those revelations into a tapestry of art, philosophy, and music.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
No warrior can ever reach the highest levels in life without mastering three essential qualities: Character, Wisdom, and Courage. Of the three, Character is the most difficult to attain. I’ve faced my own share of setbacks, made bad decisions, and stumbled along the way, so I understand those who feel they’re too far down to ever see themselves as champions. My advice is this: you must die before your death by letting go of all worldly attachments. It’s a hard process, and it takes time, so be kind to yourself as you go through it.
This path doesn’t guarantee fame, fortune, power, or pleasure, but I promise you this—it leads to a life worth living. A life where you can die with a smile on your face, and that is worth more than any heap of gold or silver.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Two people have been most valuable to me on my journey. The first is my childhood best friend, Rashid Khan, who gave up everything to become a Buddhist monk in southern France. While I’m not Buddhist, and despite our deep disagreements on many topics, our friendship remains incredibly special. Every year, I make it a point to meet with him, and we embark on some adventure together. Our most recent trip involved days of kayaking while having deep, meaningful conversations about life. I then stayed at his temple, immersing myself in the energy of his community.
The second is my best friend, Hira Sabuhi. I made her the CEO of Hidden X Soul because she is a powerhouse in every sense of the word. Not only is she an expert at bringing my artistic vision to life, but she is also destined to be one of the greatest CEOs the world has ever seen. I am committed to helping her reach that goal because she deserves it. She stood by me when no one else did—not even my own family—and for that, I will dedicate myself to seeing her succeed.
