We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amsi Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amsi , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose comes from my faith and spiritual beliefs. As a religious person, everything I do is aimed to glorify God and be an example to those around me. I believe my talents and creativity come from Him and it is my responsibility to better them and craft them to the best of my ability.
Like most creatives, the path to learning is never ending. There are always new things to learn and new people to learn from.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Los Angeles based photographer with a focus on wedding and editorial photography. My two main objectives on every shoot are to document and tell your story on your special day, and to creatively elevate your brand within your vision.
I love to be intentionally story telling on your wedding day. Capturing uninterrupted moments as they unfold and paying attention to details that otherwise go unnoticed throughout a very busy day. My approach to an editorial branding shoot is very collaborative. Tell me your full vision so I can help you visually achieve it!
After years of working for other photographers, I just started my own photography business and I’m happy to collaborate with those who would like to bring me along on their endeavor!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first area of knowledge that was impactful was learning to sink or swim. When I first started shooting, I approached my boss asking if I could be given the opportunity to shoot a wedding with her. She replied saying, “bring your gear and shadow me for the next upcoming wedding!” The best way for me to learn was to be thrown into the water!
Secondly, I learned to trust my skillset. I don’t say this to exalt myself but, I was better than I thought I was…even back when I was starting. Was there room for improvement? ALWAYS. But, I had a talent that others saw in me that just needed some training and polishing.
Lastly, be willing to rise to the occasion. Most of my opportunities came from stepping up and filling in the void left by others. All of these are areas of knowledge I would give as advice to someone who was starting out.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal clients are people who are willing to trust that I am truly aiming to give them the best of my creativity and skillset. I want you to also succeed in your brand and if that is dependent on excellent branding images, then I aim to achieve it. Let’s win together!
When it comes to weddings, If your photography vision is, unobtrusive,
timeless, and elegant images, then we’re seeing it through the same lens! pun intended. 😉
