We recently connected with Amun Uddin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amun, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I was always the very quiet and shy type, so if someone told me during my freshman year of college that I would be a beauty content creator, I would’ve probably laughed. I wasn’t someone that could have conversations with strangers or even compliment someone I didn’t know that well. and I didn’t know much about anything beauty related. My confidence grew the most while working in retail, and especially since I started at Ulta Beauty. I started out as a seasonal beauty advisor so I was usually at the register, so of course I had to talk to all customers. In the beginning, I was a bit hesitant having full conversations with them but I did do some small talk. After a few months I started getting comfortable with not only my coworkers, but also our regular customers. Then eventually I got to the point where I could have conversations with almost anyone. One of the reasons I was so hesitant at first was because I felt like I didn’t know enough about beauty to talk to customers and didn’t want to look foolish, but overtime I learned so much from my coworkers which made me feel more confident. Now I never have any issues talking to any customers, coworkers, or even filming myself for content, because I am confident with all the information I know, and even if there’s something I don’t know, I don’t mind telling the customer that and even looking it up in front of them.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a beauty content creator and have been in the beauty industry since 2018. My journey started as a seasonal beauty advisor at Ulta Beauty, and I am now the Chanel Advisor at the same location. Over the years I have been able to learn a lot about beauty, and even improve my own skills. My love for beauty grew more during the Covid lockdown, when I was at home trying out different looks and techniques late at night, so I decided to create a platform and share my love for it with the world. My content is mostly reviews of beauty products, tips and techniques, beauty deals, and different makeup looks I create. I also work with many popular brands by trying out their products and then doing reviews for them, which they either share on their websites or I share on my platforms. The most exciting thing for me is when I get to create more connections with brands and learn more about them. I always love learning new things about anything beauty related, whether it’s about new products, new trends, or just more brand knowledge in general.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my biggest quality that helped me become successful during this journey was my dedication. I went after something I truly loved and wanted to do, and didn’t listen to any negativity that was thrown my way. Instead I took it more as motivation to work harder to achieve my goals.
A skill that has helped me a lot, and is even till now is my knowledge of Marketing. I had taken Marketing classes in high school and got my BBA in Marketing, so I know how to not only promote products, but also myself in a way to brands and convince them how my work is different compared to others in the industry. Working at Ulta Beauty has also played a huge part in creating my platform. I was able to gain a lot of product knowledge, learn different tips and techniques, and try out new products, which I then started sharing on my platforms.
Advice I would give anyone who is just starting out in content creation is that don’t give up on yourself. There might be times where your social media numbers don’t look the best and that is okay, just keep working hard, be unique, and have fun with it.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Since I do have a full time job and now I’m also an Ulta Beauty Ambassador, it does get difficult to balance all that with content creation. With my full time job, I usually have mid shifts and my days off are typically packed with things to do, so I always have to plan out my time in advance to make sure I do film content. I try my best to still give myself a break and have some ‘me-time’ as well so I don’t get too overwhelmed with work. So usually after work I’ll eat and relax, watch something on Netflix and spend time with my family. Then after a few hours, I’ll go through my emails and planner to see what campaigns I need to work on and make a list for what I need to do and prioritize whatever is due first and then start filming all the easy parts. On my days off I try to film the longer videos during the day in natural sunlight and then edit at night. I think the most important thing in content creation is planning and time management. Having a planner really helps me keep track of my campaigns and due dates, and I even set some deadlines for myself to get some stuff done on days I know I’m not too busy.
