We recently connected with Amy Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I am committed to continually improving my confidence and self-esteem, especially as a woman but also as a Registered Dietitian and as a mom. From a nutrition perspective, my confidence grew as I saw a lot of misinformation about food and nutrition shared on social media. Seeing unqualified influencers evoke fear about food and nutrition inspired me to share my expertise and knowledge to provide accurate, positive, and realistic advice to help others feel confident and empowered about their food choices. I also work to build my confidence and self-esteem by engaging in self-care, practicing gratitude, stepping outside my comfort zone, and by asking for help even when it’s hard to admit I need it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
First of all, hi! I’m Amy Anderson, I’m a Registered Dietitian, and mom of 3 and I like to refer to myself as your personal nutrition cheerleader! I’m on a mission to help fellow moms alleviate the stress and mental burden of feeding a family by teaching my simple, 3 step meal-planning process. I also support women with a variety of individualized nutrition needs from pre and postnatal care, family nutrition and picky eating, gut health support, food freedom, healthy habit building and more!
Although I’ve been a dietitian for 11+ years, I recently stepped outside my comfort zone and launched a virtual nutrition practice and it’s been so incredibly rewarding! I love working 1:1 with women and in groups via my small group coaching program, The Meal Planning Method – where I show women time, money, and stress-saving strategies to plan nutritious meals the whole family will enjoy.
In addition to supporting moms and fellow women, I am also passionate about providing positive food and nutrition messaging to young girls. I grew up as a dancer and danced professionally in the NBA for several years. Dance is an aesthetic sport and requires both strength and beauty. I have been speaking to young dancers for years, sharing the importance of proper fueling and recovery to support the unique demands of this art form. I am now a proud “dance mom” to an 8-year old daughter who has fallen in love with dance herself.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe in the importance of taking action without fixating on achieving perfection, which is a hard habit to break. Historically, the traits of perfectionism and waiting for the “right time” have hindered my progress. I value the cultivation of confidence to take risks, coupled with the ability to maintain a sense of humor and perspective, acknowledging that not everything is as serious as it seems!
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I recently launched my virtual nutrition practice in the spring of 2022. After years of contemplation, I finally took the leap and made it happen. I’ve gained valuable knowledge about entrepreneurship from business coaches, courses, books, podcasts, and even social media. Moving from a typical corporate job structure and building a nutrition practice where I get to call the shots has been both incredibly fun and extremely challenging. This change has marked the most significant period of mental and professional growth for me. I’ve taken risks, changed the way I earn money to support my family, and truly put myself out there. I’m proud of the progress and the new skills and relationships I’ve developed. I’m immensely grateful for the clients who have trusted me and helped me build my growing practice, and I’m excited about the opportunity to serve more women in the future!
