Meet Amy Breuer

We were lucky to catch up with Amy Breuer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Amy , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being effective and successful – being a leader – when no one else is looking matters but admittingly; it can be challenging because it takes discipline. It’s in these quiet times that we must be connected to our core values, personal qualities, skills, strengths and strategies to lead effectively.

Here are 5 things I consider important in being effective (whether or not someone’s looking)
1. Self-awareness and self-care: Understanding of strengths, weaknesses, values, and leadership style.Taking care of my physical and mental well-being.
2. Develop personally and professionally. Become an avid reader. Continuously improving my knowledge and skills is important to me.
3. Set clear goals & create accountability: Defining my objectives keeps me looking forward and gives me direction and purpose but also keeping myself accountable is certainly on the back end of that… doing what I say I will do!
4. Decision-making & adaptability: Make informed and timely decisions based on data, analysis, and intuition. Confidence in decisions is key but also be flexible and open to bending and flexing when needed.
5. Stay motivated: It’s important to stay motivate, positive and maintain a strong sense of purpose.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Together, we’re not just writing stories; we’re creating them: crafting a movement that celebrates the richness of beauty in all its forms.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Being a life-long learner 2. Falling forward (learning from mistakes)
3. The ability to bend and flex

1. Being a Life-Long Learner:
-Establish clear objectives for what you want to learn and accomplish. Break them down into smaller, achievable milestones.
-Cultivate a thirst for knowledge. Ask questions, explore new topics, and seek out information beyond your comfort zone.
-Don’t limit yourself to one medium or method of learning. Read books, take online courses, attend seminars, and engage in hands-on experiences.
-Surround yourself with people who inspire you and can share their knowledge and experiences. Seek out mentors who can guide you on your learning journey.
-Regularly reflect on what you’ve learned and how it applies to your goals. Practice what you’ve learned to reinforce your understanding.

2. Falling Forward (Learning from Mistakes):
-Understand that mistakes are not setbacks but opportunities to learn and grow. Embrace a growth mindset that sees challenges as a chance to improve.
-When you make a mistake, take the time to analyze what went wrong and why. Identify the lessons you can extract from the experience.
-Perspectives can provide valuable insights and help you avoid repeating the same mistakes.
-Apply the lessons from your mistakes to your future actions. Adjust your strategies, approaches, and decisions based on what you’ve learned.

3. The Ability to Bend and Flex:
-Recognize that change is a constant in life and in most journeys. Develop the mindset of adaptability, which involves being open to change and flexible in your approaches.
-When faced with challenges, setbacks, or unexpected changes, focus on your ability to bounce back and persevere. -Develop coping mechanisms that help you stay resilient.
-Anticipate potential obstacles or changes in your journey and create contingency plans. Having alternatives in mind can reduce stress and improve your ability to adapt.
-Study the experiences of those who have successfully navigated similar challenges or changes. Their insights can provide valuable guidance.
