We were lucky to catch up with Amy Brooks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
Growing up, I was homeschooled which created a lot of flexibility within my schedule. In high school, I was given the opportunity to work and dual enroll at FSCJ which taught me how to enforce discipline in my schedule. List making and *not* procrastinating has been an overflowing benefit carried into my adult life. Homeschooling taught me to be independent and confident in pursuing what I wanted without fear.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are an event planning and design company based out of St. John’s County. We offer floral services and manage a local venue in Saint Augustine, FL. as well. At Southern Grace we focus on bringing out the best of an event. We strive to create successful, detailed, memorable events with our couples’ experience at the forefront. However, Guest experience and our vendor collaboration isn’t far behind on our priority list. Our mission is to make sure our couples feel how much we mean it when we say ‘we’ve got this and we’ve got your back’.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
From a young age I was told by numerous people that I had a hostess heart. My mom recalls me gathering flowers and setting the table for ‘dinner parties’ from as early as 4 years old. That desire never left my heart and even though I had no clue it would lead here, I knew I could find a way to help others while doing what I love – and make a living doing so.
Three things I wish I knew when I was first starting out…
1. Even though it will take time to earn the respect of your fellow vendors, don’t let it discourage you or make you question your value, ability or God given talent.
2. Ignore the ‘stay in your lane’ narrative. I’m not saying lightly dabble in all the things but don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t want to succeed in more than one area. Do it and do it well with no apologies. Make your own lane!
3. Just jump. Don’t wait til you have it all figured out. Dive in, figure it out and learn as much as you can!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Our business is consistently growing and we will soon be looking to expand the Southern Grace girl gang. We have a tightly knit group of boss babes and feel that is a key component for any work environment. It is important to enjoy and care about your work family as it overflows into the overall event production. We execute each event as a team so making sure we are well connected is crucial!
If you think you might be a good fit, you’re a quick learner and you have event experience, please email [email protected] to learn about our upcoming openings!
