Meet Amy Gumbs

We recently connected with Amy Gumbs and have shared our conversation below.

Amy, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
A phrase I often say to myself is, “You’ve come this far you can’t stop now.” Naturally, I am someone who looks for the silver lining in a situation, which helps me in challenging times. I use this to shift my focus from a woe is me and everything is terrible mindset to what can I learn from this moment? It doesn’t always happened immediately or quickly, but it does come. This is how I’ve grown over the last 7 years in the fitness industry and 3 years as a business owner.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am Amy and I’m a personal trainer. I train women to create a consistent strength training routine that they enjoy. I work to help people get excited about the process and build strength. My clients often train with kettlebells. I’m always proud when women drop the 5 lb dumbbells for 25 lb kettlebells.

I grew up an athlete, competing in soccer and track in high school. It wasn’t until college that I started weightlifting. I found it exciting to train similar exercises week in and week out. Gradually increasing the weights I was lifting brought me joy. During this time, one of my roommates asked me to show her my workout routine. This essentially was my first client. I loved our time together at the gym as I shared my knowledge with her.

I started personal training in 2016 at a big box gym. Through the years I have shifted to an independent, virtual personal trainer. I get to train women across the country. Being virtual, when someone moves, that doesn’t mean our training relationship ends. This has allowed consistency and clients to train with me for years.

If nothing else, my main goal is to remind women that they are stronger than they think they are.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am fascinated by the body. I love pairing client goals, with their current and past injuries, and piecing the puzzle together of what will be most beneficial for their training time. A curiosity about the individual body is key. Everyone is different and they need to figure out how to move their individual body well.

I am an encourager. My clients trust my programming, even when they aren’t confident they can complete the exercise I have programmed and demonstrated for them. I hear the phrase, “wow, I really didn’t think I was going to be able to do that” regularly.

I commit to my schedule. My clients can rely on me to show up on time and complete our training session when it’s supposed to end. They get the dates one month in advance so they can plan and prepare their schedules accordingly.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I am 4 months postpartum with my first baby. I love my baby and enjoy our time together. The flip side of that is the time I have to work on my business is limited. I am navigating sleep deprivation, and unpredictable infant schedules alongside managing a business and remaining reliable for my clients.

I truly love what I do and each one of my clients, which makes figuring out this challenge worth fighting for in my mind. I have time carved out each day to program and meet with clients and I am figuring out how to stay productive during those hours.

I don’t know many entrepreneurial moms with young babies, which makes this stage feel lonely at times. Another challenge I am working to overcome – is finding community even though the community I’m looking for also has a limited schedule.
