Meet Amy Herzberg

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Herzberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Amy , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

Where do I get my work ethic? Well, I feel like that’s a complicated question, because sometimes, I don’t feel like I have “work”.
Working as an a performer and a vocal teacher, I’m basically a freelancer.
Which means I make my own schedule, I’m the one looking for projects/shows/students etc. It’s not your usual 9-5. And so, what really cultivated my work ethic is the understanding that if I don’t actively work to get myself work – I simply won’t work. And that’s not fun is it?
So, because I love what I do and want to do more of it – I just like to find new ways to make sure I get to do what I love to do!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m an actress, singer, dancer, choreographer, model and vocal coach based in New York City.
I’ve performed in Off-Broadway shows, regional shows and internationally.
I’ve moved to New York City almost two years ago now from Israel with my husband.
It’s been a long term dream of ours to move to NYC, as I’m a musical theater performer and he’s a composer (and a software engineer. That guy can do it all ;). So, we moved here with two suitcases and a dream. Less than two months after moving here I booked my first Off-Broadway show, which was incredible to say the least.
Since then, I haven’t stopped working and got to be a part of some incredible projects. Currently, I’m in a musical called “Betty & The Belrays” and I can’t wait to show it to the world in October!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities that impacted my journey were perseverance, dedication and determination. To truly make it in this career, it’s just not an option to give up on yourself, or think someone is going to come and “discover you”. Sure, it’s happens for like 0.000000001%, but for the rest of us – we just have to keep working. Better ourselves. Get up every morning and make a game plan for the future, go to dance class, go to acting class, go to vocal lessons and audition like crazy – and in the end, if we keep getting better and better and keep showing up – that’s the only recipe for success.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

The greatest support I have is my husband. He’s always there for me and we face challenges together.
We moved to America on our own 2 years ago, and we have no family here.
It’s just us and the cat 😉
So, it’s easy to feel alone, or overwhelmed by challenges – challenges in our careers, or even just the challenges that come from moving into an entirely different culture.
We rely on each other. Every challenge that I face, he’s right there beside me, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
