We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Lynn Durham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy Lynn, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
My journey in developing the ability to take risks has been both enlightening and transformative. As a Founder of an Executive Coaching firm and an Edgewalker facilitator, I’ve learned that taking risks isn’t about recklessness but rather about navigating the unknown with a blend of intuition and strategy.
Initially, I approached risk-taking with a mix of curiosity and caution. I wanted to explore new possibilities and break new ground, but I needed to feel a solid foundation before stepping out. This moderate approach allowed me to weigh my options carefully and trust my instincts while managing fear. Over time, I realized that my ability to envision a clear path forward, combined with a strong sense of passion and purpose, made taking risks feel more natural and rewarding.
One of the key elements in my growth has been recognizing and addressing the fear that often accompanies risk-taking. It’s common to experience a sense of trepidation when facing new challenges. Through mindfulness and self-reflection, I’ve learned to differentiate between protective fear from the past and the wise caution needed for current situations. This practice has enabled me to move forward with confidence and clarity.
I leverage these experiences to help others develop their own risk-taking abilities. I help my clients focus on embracing small, manageable risks as a way to build confidence and resilience. By encouraging clients to journal their experiences and reflect on past successes, I help them recognize the value of stepping out of their comfort zones. Additionally, I guide them through practices and tools that support mindful risk-taking, helping them to overcome fear and tap into their higher selves.
I emphasize the importance of having a clear vision and a sense of adventure. This approach not only helps to have a healthy relationship with risk but also empowers individuals to create meaningful change in their lives. Ultimately, it’s about transforming fear into opportunity and using it as a catalyst for growth and innovation.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Amy Lynn Durham, the founder of Create Magic at Work®, and my journey into this space is one of deep transformation and purpose. As a former high-ranking corporate executive in the retail industry, I managed hundreds of employees while working for both private and publicly traded companies. Despite my success, I began to feel a sense of burnout and loneliness, which I attributed to the isolating nature of my role. This led me to start incorporating human-centered activities into my leadership approach, helping my teams connect on a more personal level.
During this time, I underwent a profound spiritual awakening, which ultimately inspired me to leave the corporate world and re-enter the workforce as the “Corporate Mystic” behind Create Magic at Work®. My company is dedicated to promoting human-centered workplaces and fostering a deeper understanding of humanity within everyone, especially leaders who are looking to expand their skills beyond traditional emotional intelligence.
At Create Magic at Work®, we offer a wide range of products, services, and workshops aimed at helping leaders access their spiritual intelligence and become what I call “quantum leaders.” These leaders can make wise and compassionate decisions that positively impact communities, the planet, and humanity. Our offerings include the Creating Career Magic: A Daily Prompt Journal, a Journal Prompt Card Deck, and transformative workshops designed around these products. We also provide one-on-one coaching for leaders who are committed to a transformative journey. These sessions are designed to help them experience inner and outer peace, even under the most stressful circumstances.
Our podcast, Create Magic at Work, has gained significant popularity, offering a unique perspective on workplace leadership with a focus on spiritual intelligence and quantum leadership. Each episode features guests who share insights and tips to help individuals become wise and compassionate leaders.
The central theme of our work is helping clients put their fear, ego, and defensiveness aside and instead operate from a place of inner wisdom, compassion, and love. By learning to differentiate between these two approaches and practicing operating from a place of inner wisdom more frequently, individuals can seek guidance from within and make more effective decisions as leaders.
As I reflect on my journey, I remember a turning point that solidified my decision to leave the corporate world. During a lunch break, I found a magnet with the words “leap and the net will appear.” That message resonated deeply with me, and to this day, it remains on my refrigerator as a reminder of the power of trusting oneself and the magic that unfolds when we take bold steps toward our true purpose.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey are self-belief, staying focused on essentials, and recognizing the value of true guidance.
Self-Belief -Trusting in myself and my vision has been crucial, even when things weren’t going as planned. There were plenty of moments when self-doubt crept in—times when the path seemed unclear, and I questioned my choices. However, staying grounded in the belief that I was on the right path helped me push through those challenges. My advice for those starting out is to practice cultivating discernment. Trust that you have what it takes, and don’t let external opinions or temporary setbacks shake your confidence. Your belief in yourself will be your greatest asset, even when everything else feels uncertain.
Staying Focused on Essentials – In my early journey, I sometimes got distracted by tasks or advice that weren’t aligned with the core necessities of building a successful business. It’s easy to be drawn into aspects that seem appealing but aren’t essential. Instead, focusing on foundational elements such as effective business strategies, reliable financial management, and realistic goal-setting is crucial. My advice is to stay grounded in what truly matters for your business’s growth. Avoid getting sidetracked by non-essential tasks or flashy promises. Keep your attention on the core activities that will build a solid foundation for long-term success.
Recognizing the Value of True Guidance -The journey involves meeting many people and encountering various types of advice. I’ve learned the importance of surrounding myself with genuine mentors and support systems that align with my vision and goals. Effective guidance helps you stay focused on your path and navigate the complexities of building a business. The team at Create Magic At Work excels at this by helping clients discern between real opportunities and distractions. Their support in honing vision, identifying key actions, and maintaining focus is invaluable.
My advice for those early in their journey is to remain committed to your core values and be discerning about who you choose to work with and support you. The right support system can truly make the difference between feeling lost and finding your way with confidence and clarity.
