We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Mack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy Mack, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from being raised in a community where people showed up for each other, even when they didn’t have much. I’ve seen firsthand how a small act of kindness can completely shift someone’s day or even their life. I also believe that generosity isn’t just about money or material things. It’s about time, energy, listening, encouragement, and being present for people in meaningful ways.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a storyteller at heart, which shows up in my work as a performer, a public servant and a connector. I’ve built my career at the intersection of creativity and connection, whether through acting, community leadership or fostering collaboration and understanding.
What excites me most is the chance to amplify voices and bring people together through thoughtful, intentional communication. I believe storytelling is a powerful tool for change, and I bring that mindset into everything I do.
Right now, I’m focused on deepening my impact in both creative and civic spaces while continuing to grow professionally. I’m passionate about expanding my skills and exploring new opportunities that allow me to connect with others and tell meaningful stories.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that helped me most are grit, curiosity and communication. Grit kept me going through challenges. Curiosity made me open to learning and trying new things. Communication helped me build relationships and share my story.
For those starting out, my advice is to see challenges as chances to grow. Stay curious and keep learning. Work on your communication skills by listening well and expressing yourself clearly. These will help you in any path you choose.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m overwhelmed, the first thing I do is pause and take a breath. I try to get out of my head and back into my body, even if that just means standing up or stepping outside. Then I look at what actually needs to get done and take it one small step at a time. I remind myself it’s okay to slow down. Some days I move fast. Some days I just do my best, and that is enough.
