We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Norman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through the power of transformation. I’ve always been drawn to creativity, but it wasn’t until I saw how makeup could completely shift someone’s confidence and energy that I realized this was more than just a skill—it was a way to help people feel seen, celebrated, and strong. Over time, I discovered that my purpose isn’t just about applying makeup; it’s about making people feel empowered, whether it’s for a special moment or just to remind them of their worth.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a makeup artist, I specialize in enhancing natural beauty while also celebrating individuality through creative expression. Whether I’m working on a bride’s most memorable day, a photoshoot, or a bold editorial look, my goal is always the same: to help people feel confident, empowered, and completely themselves.
What I love most about what I do is the transformation—not just physically, but emotionally. Makeup is more than skin deep. It’s a form of self-expression, healing, and sometimes even armor. Being a part of that process with my clients is something I’ll never take for granted.
My brand is rooted in authenticity, artistry, and connection. I take pride in creating a calm, welcoming space where clients feel heard and celebrated. Whether we’re doing a soft glam or pushing boundaries with bold color, the experience is always tailored to the individual.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities that have had the biggest impact on my journey as a makeup artist are resilience, empathy, and continuous learning.
1. Resilience – This industry can be unpredictable and competitive, and there were times early on when I doubted myself. But I learned that setbacks are part of growth. Whether it’s a last-minute cancellation, a tough critique, or a slow season, you have to keep showing up and believing in your purpose. My advice: don’t take every bump personally. Stay consistent, trust the process, and use challenges as fuel to keep improving.
2. Empathy – Makeup artistry is so personal. You’re often working with people during emotional or vulnerable moments—weddings, photo shoots, interviews. Being able to truly listen and create a space where clients feel safe and celebrated makes all the difference. To grow in this area, focus on connection first. Learn how to read people’s energy, ask the right questions, and show that you genuinely care—not just about the look, but about how they feel in it.
3. Continuous Learning – Trends change, techniques evolve, and there’s always something new to master. I’ve committed to investing in my growth, whether it’s through workshops, mentorship, or just practicing a new technique on my own time. For anyone starting out: stay curious. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, experiment, or even “fail” at something new, it’s all part of leveling up your craft.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I think the most impactful thing my parents did for me was never to give up on my dreams. They have always supported me in whatever it was that I wanted to do when I was a kid and throughout my younger years. I think its so important to have people in your life to believe in you even when you don’t believe in yourself and I was so blessed to have parents that did that for me.
