We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Rosko a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
For self-care, we head outside. Nature is our go-to. Whether it’s a walk in the woods, sitting under a tree, or breathing in some fresh air, it helps us slow down and be present. It can be hard to break away, especially when deep in a project or feeling that urge to just keep pushing through, but taking that time in nature actually helps us get more done and enjoy the process a lot more, too.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We’re Tess Donohoe and Amy Rosko, the co-creators of Hear Here Oracle Decks. Our decks are designed to offer a multi-layered divination experience that’s both accessible and engaging. Each card in the deck features an illustration and a word, with accompanying practical exercises described in the guidebook to help connect with the mind, the body, and the energy of spaces or objects. Our decks, BODY and HOME, focus on personal energy and environmental energy, respectively, and can be used together or separately. Our third deck, MIND, is in development.
Our collaboration began while working at a creative agency in Portland, Oregon, where we wanted to create a mindfulness tool to foster care, connection, and awareness in today’s fast-paced world. Tess, based in Denmark, handles the design and illustrations, while Amy, in the Pacific Northwest, develops the exercises and manages operations.
We are excited to develop a third deck. It gives us a chance to get back to the brainstorming and sketching phases which are the most creative parts of the journey for us.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Learn: Continuing to learn new skills and trying new things keeps our creativity flowing and there is always more to explore!
2. Practice: It’s a daily activity for us, whether sketching, stretching, connecting with nature, or meditating. It does not have to be big. A couple of minutes can make a big difference.
3. Enjoy: We check in often to make sure we are still having fun and enjoy what we do! Feeling joy can help point you toward what’s aligned and what’s not.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
We genuinely use the techniques featured in our oracle decks! These practices are designed to shift energy quickly, so when we’re feeling overwhelmed, they help ease tension and invite a sense of calm.
One of our favorite tips for managing overwhelm from our BODY deck is:
Shaking Movement
-This practice can be done sitting, standing, or lying down. Choose what feels best for your body.
-If standing, keep a soft bend in your knees to avoid locking or hyperextending them.
-Relax your shoulders, letting your shoulder blades soften down your back.
-Begin shaking and bouncing your entire body. Let your arms and legs move freely and naturally.
-If lying down, try quickly pointing and flexing your feet. This can help activate a full-body shake.
-Continue for as long as it feels good. When you stop, take a moment to notice the fresh energy moving through your body.
-This simple practice helps release stuck or excess energy and can bring a sense of reset and refresh.
