We were lucky to catch up with Amy Schamberg recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amy , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Like many, finding my purpose has been an evolution of life experiences, transformations, and deep inner work… along with a healthy dose of and trial and error.
I always knew I wanted to go into the helping professions. I’ve worked as a school psychologist since 2010, and in 2021 I completed a rigorous training program to become a board certified functional medicine health coach. Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of children, teens, young millennials and adults of all ages, and have found that work to be incredibly meaningful.
However, it wasn’t until I endured multiple episodes of burnout- including a significant episode in 2021 that left me unable to function for nearly three months- that I finally understood my true calling. Since then, I have made it my mission to help other ambitious, high-achieving, deeply caring professionals build resilience and develop the skills to prioritize themselves, so that they don’t have to hit burnout rock-bottom like I did, and instead can feel empowered to take the steps necessary to break the cycle of chronic stress and stop putting themselves last.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I run a health and wellness company that aims to guide highly ambitious, deeply caring professionals on an essential journey to real self-care, through coaching, workshops, and various wellness experiences.
With coaching, I help clients gain clarity on their current situation, identify their ideal future, and then get to the root cause of what’s holding them back. From there, we are able to create an action plan to close that gap. A few of the underlying causes that I often see include things like people-pleasing tendencies, struggles with saying no or setting boundaries, feeling guilty for making time for themselves, feeling stuck and exhausted, or just not knowing where to begin.
So many of my clients and workshop attendees arrive feeling overwhelmed by the never-ending demands of their careers, families, and personal lives. I help them see that it doesn’t have to be this way; that they really can find a way to integrate all areas of their lives, including a successful career, better relationships, and more free time for themselves.
I’m really excited about some recent events this fall. In September, I had the honor of providing an important and necessary staff wellness workshop for a dedicated and brilliant group of local educators. Teachers have one of the highest burnout rates of all professions in the US, yet there are ways to transform the stress response and cultivate resilience so that educators can regain well-being and thrive in their roles.
On October 3rd, I was one of 8 speakers on a panel for Women In Design Denver’s 18th annual 8×8 event. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with 7 other accomplished and inspiring professionals. My talk was on overcoming burnout with a new path to wellness, following my process of “Self-Care by Subtraction.”
Additionally, I’ve recently joined forces with two other amazing coaches in Denver, and on October 4th we hosted a Wellness Social for 75 high-achieving, caring professionals. The event was called “From Busy to Balanced: How to Create Calm in a World of Chaos,” with various wellness stations, mini workshop talks, a wellness-inspired raffle and goodie bags. Our goal was for attendees to leave feeling empowered to take action to prioritize their well-being and from the beautiful feedback we received, it was a success! I hope to put on more “Busy to Balanced” events this winter.
Looking ahead, I will continue with staff wellness workshops and motivational talks on the power of subtraction. I’m also working on launching a course and a group coaching experience to show participants how to get out of a burnout rut and confidently commit to their next move.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Personal resilience. You’re going to get knocked down, and what’s most important is getting back up and looking at the fall as a learning opportunity. What can you gain from this experience? What can you take away from it that will allow you to rise and become even stronger or wiser?
2) Stick to your healthy routines. As an entrepreneur, the work never ends, and chances are you love every second of it! I’ve definitely found myself neglecting things like exercise, downtime, and sleep because I’ve been so excited to continue working on a project. However, that never works out for me, and I’ve started reciting the mantra “When I feel good about myself, I take better care of others and my business” as a reminder.
3) Find a mentor. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from some incredible mentors along the way and without each of them, there’s no way I’d be where I am today. As the saying goes, “you don’t know what you don’t know,” so find someone who does know, and learn from them. It’s the only way to progress.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes! As someone much wiser once told me, there is great power and potential in collaboration. 100% truth.
I am passionate about spreading my message and teachings on burnout transformation and self-care by subtraction, and would love to partner with any agency in this capacity. I am open to exploring opportunities for public speaking, corporate workshops, team trainings or wellness events.
