We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amy Sems. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amy below.
Amy, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from my faith in God. He has given me SO much to be grateful for, and every day before bed I go on my knees and think about all the things from that day that I can be thankful for. Even when life is hard, I remind myself that those difficulties won’t last forever, and there’s always hope for the future. Plus, hard times often help us develop character, which is another thing to be thankful for.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer-songwriter with a focus on creating music that can be helpful for TV, Film, and Advertising. It’s a really cool feeling to know that your music is helping capture the emotion of a scene and aiding in the storytelling. I love expressing myself through music, but I’m a mom of young kids and not in a season of life where it’d be easy for me to do a lot of live shows, so writing and releasing music, and pitching music for media is a way for me to get my music out into the world while still keeping my family the priority.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, a desire to learn, and friendliness. In my industry you have to be resilient because for every yes, there’s dozens of no’s before you get that yes. If I were to have quit when someone told me my music wasn’t good enough I would never have gotten anywhere. However, there was a point in my career where my music really wasn’t at a level for professional industry standards, and that’s where the desire to learn comes in. I’ve taken countless courses on how to make better music, and I still have a long journey ahead of me to make music that is competitive in a very oversaturated field. The reason I chose friendliness as a third important quality is because the saying “it’s all about who you know” does have some truth to it. Being open to working with and helping others has been maybe the most pivotal part of my journey. I’ve top lined for many producers, and in turn they’ve helped me with production and mixing and mastering on some of my song ideas. I’ve also had several songs signed to sync agencies through friends I’ve made and partnered with who had connections I didn’t have.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love collaborating with others. I primarily collaborate with Producers, but also work with fellow songwriters and musicians. If you’d like to make a song together you can email me at Amy@AmySems.com or reach out to me on social media @Amy_Sems.
