We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amy Tackett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I spend a lot of time in prayer and in community with my Christian family. I also love to take breaks from social media and “unplug,” as they say. And then, of course, I love reading. I never feel so inspired and refreshed than after a weekend of reading a good book.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an indie thriller/horror author, but not in your typical fashion. I’ve felt called to write since I was a young girl. I’ve always said it was woven into my DNA, like a precious gift from God. I love to tiptoe into the darkness with my writing, only to shine a light where others may not have. I feel very passionate about introducing the hope of Jesus to new readers in a unique, gentle way. That’s why, when you pick up one of my books, it will always have raw, dark content, but it will also have at least a sprinkle of light, if not more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, faith, writing, and marketing have been instrumental in what I do. My best advice to simply seek Jesus first, and the rest will fall into place. He paved the way for me to hone my craft before I even realized that’s what was happening.
If you feel passionate about something, it’s probably for a reason. Lean into that. Pursue God, pursue your passions, and don’t let fear stop you.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One of my favorite books when I started pursuing publication was ON WRITING by Stephen King. His memoir is a gold mine of knowledge, but what I really love is the kick in the butt he provides. He essentially tells you to stop making excuses and just do it, and then he provides his best tips and tricks to achieve those goals. It really put things into perspective for me. I’ve read it three times now, each when I needed an additional push and was lacking motivation.
