Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ana Cláudia Santos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ana Cláudia, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a young portuguese poet, I delve into supernatural and mystical themes, drawing inspiration from my profound connection to the occult since childhood. Feeling distinct from others, I recognized early on that not everyone shares the same sensitivity and sense of detachment from reality. For a considerable time, I concealed this aspect, but the ghostly side of life has always been a constant companion. Today, I’ve transformed these experiences into poems, embracing them as integral to my identity. I unapologetically acknowledge my strong connection to occult forces and magic. While I understand that these poetic themes may not resonate with everyone, they constitute the essence of my creativity and poetry. I share my truth, my unique perspective on the world, and I’ve learned to turn what was once considered strange into something even more peculiar and poetic.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Ana Cláudia Santos, a portuguese poet, host of the “Multiversos” podcast on NiT FM radio, and the producer of poetry events such as “L.U.A. – Literatura, Universo, Artes” and “Sala Incomum.” I serve as the poetry ambassador for the “Agarra-te” project at SABSEG, a resident poet at Casa Florbela Espanca, and a cultural mediator at the Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações. I studied Literature at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Literary Writing and Event Production and Marketing at Restart Creative Education. I am the author of the independent poetry book “Meia-Vida,” illustrated by the visual artist João Massano, which was launched at Livraria Ler Devagar, LX Factory. In 2021, I was a finalist at the Lisbon Poetry Festival, receiving an honorable mention. I won the national talent competition “New Talent,” organized by NiT, TVI, and Santa Casa da Misericórdia. In 2023, I released the single “Incorpóreo,” a preview of my first EP, “O Meu Reino Não É Deste Mundo,” featuring poetry written by me and music composed by Diogo Lourenço. The EP premiered at Casa Fernando Pessoa. I am also the curator of the new poetry anthology “Fábricas de Novas Almas” by Caminho das Palavras. My second book, “O Espectro,” will be released on World Poetry Day in 2024, being the first book launched by Casa Florbela Espanca.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I never switch off the “poetry chip.” I am constantly seeking inspiration wherever I go. Whether I am walking, sleeping, or engaging in any everyday activity, inspiration is everywhere.
Studying Literature was a crucial point in my development as a poet because it provided me with a profound understanding of the world of writing and interpretation. Literature should be appreciated, not only ours but that of everyone.
I feel that I adapt well to any situation. Since leaving college, I’ve had various jobs in completely different areas and roles. I believe this has given me ample space to understand what I like or dislike doing, but it has also taught me that I can perform tasks I never imagined.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents shaped my perspective on life, and it was with them that I grew up. From a very young age, my parents always bought me many books, instilling in me a love for reading from early on. I grew up appreciating both reading and writing. Even before knowing how to read, I already wished to learn so I could dive into the world of Harry Potter books, which laid the foundation of my life. My parents always allowed me to be who I wanted to be. A witch? A writer? It was all fine, as long as I was happy. I owe everything to them.
