We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ana Elisa Ribeiro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ana Elisa below.
Hi Ana Elisa, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome affect many women. This is probably because we learn to feel insufficiently skilled or good enough to occupy certain positions. We need to remember that out intelligence is as big as any other and that we can reach what we want, as far as we don’t believe anything that people say to diminish us.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a professional that is completely centered in the possibilities around the Languages career. I have a degree in Linguistics, I work as a professor of native language (in my case, Brazilian Portuguese), but I also put a lot of energy in book publishing, in literary writing and in research about editing and publishing books. I’m a recognized researcher in my country, I have published several academic books – most of them discussing the relation between text and digital technology.
I have also published literary books (poetry, short stories and young readers’ books), for which I have been recognized with some awards. All of this has always made a lot of sense in my life and work, so other people may be awakened to these possibilities or achieve their goals in this area.
Recently, I published an academic book that helps in the education process of those who work editing texts in Portuguese. Soon, I’ll offer a course on the topic.
I discovered my passion for reading and writing in a very young age, and it guided my steps for my whole life. I don’t regret any of the choices I made. I can’t say I feel satisfied, but this also motivates me to always seek to improve, learn more and remain firm in my goals.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It was very important to be a dedicated person, keep focused in my studies and have a good notion of what my priorities are. Professional life in the field of Languages, as a writer or an editor, as well as a teacher, is more and more competitive, not always fair and many times it doesn’t depend on our personal effort. When we know we have some disadvantages (geographical, gender or class-related, among others), we need to be more rigorous about what we want and want to achieve. It was and is important to keep those things in mind and keep paying attention to our clear objectives. For those who are starting this journey, it is important to be clear on what you want and what is needed to be done (to carry out, to materialize) to reach interesting places. Almost everything depends on patience and effort.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Some obstacles are always present, such as structural misogyny, the difference of the value attributed to different fields of knowledge, the hegemony among regions of the country, and others. If we aren’t lucky enough to live in certain places and times, we need to be aware of that as soon as possible and double the effort we put into work. I’m always fighting against some elements that somehow hold me back or try to distract me from my goals. I put a lot of effort into studying, working and sharing the results, but this doesn’t always have the expected effect. I rely on very special partners, with whom I can produce well and that make everything more fun. This is also essential. We are not alone in face of challenges.
