Meet Anathemma

We were lucky to catch up with Anathemma recently and have shared our conversation below.

Anathemma, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
We found our purpose because of our bassist Adrian Tellez. Hungry to play thrash, Adrian had pestered Allan into starting a metal band with him! After wearing Allan down, Anathemma began. Allan and Adrian collaborated together to decide the direction of the band. After much discussion, we both agreed to base our music in thrash metal. We both fell in love playing the music we began to create together and rekindled our childhood jam sessions. Growing up, Adrian and Allan would jam to tracks such as “The Four Horsemen,” “Master of Puppets,” and “Trooper.” Fast forwarding to 2016, we both knew this was our calling. With time passing by, we began to put together our debut album Bound by the Wicked. In September of last year, we opened for Metal Church. As Adrian and Allan watched their performance, Adrian told Allan “I can see myself doing this until their age.” Allan responded with, “Me too bro. We’ll get there!”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Our band Anathemma is a thrash metal group based in Los Angeles, California. We began in 2016 with the intention of connecting with others through thrash. During the weekends, we perform throughout the Southern California region, and we enjoy playing in front of all audiences. Also, we will play other states if the opportunity arises. Our goal has always been one thing, which is to spread our music and passion for the art. Whether through our riffs or artwork, we aim to connect to our audiences. Although we are a thrash metal band, we are evolving our music to what we feel represents us at the time being. With our album reaching its one year anniversary, it is time to start releasing new music! Perhaps by October? We think we’re due another EP. It’s been a minute!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel like connecting with other musicians and people in the metal community has been very impactful. We have been able to make great connections with other local bands and share knowledge and experience with each other. We have also built familial relationships with bands that we have met throughout the journey. Without music, theses bonds would have never occurred! Huge shoutout to bands such as Minority, The Kaotics, ToXxXic, Nomanic, and more! In terms of advice, we would recommend to work with those who have the same mindset and goals. It is more valuable to spend a lot of time searching for people who want to work with you rather than recruiting the first person you meet. As long as each person in the group shares the same mindset and goals, it will really help reach that goal of success.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Ahh yes! There are thousands of obstacles for the band, and currently it would be missing a member in the band! Although we are down one guitarist, we have been able to adapt and continue as a three piece. Overcoming the issue, we have adapted our music in a way that fills the gaps. This also gives us more time to find the right person we need since we are not worried about the live performance aspect. Also, having the space to practice and perfect our imperfections has been a huge help for us regarding growth. Whenever we find that right person, we will recruit them and plug them into the music right away. No sweating here! We got this!
