Meet Ander Sevilla

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ander Sevilla a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ander , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

My ability to take risk stems from the realization that adults are just people too. I remember being in college, learning from professors who I felt were only there to collect a pay check. While I had many intelligent, compassionate, invested, and hard working professors; I felt that an overwhelming majority did not necessarily have my best interests at heart. Even fewer had ever accomplished anything remotely close to what I had my eyes set on. I scored very highly on my LSAT, was admitted to several impressive law school, and decided to walk away from it all in order to build my own career from scratch. This single risk would change the entire trajectory of my life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Ander Sevilla and I am a 25 year old business owner from Orange County, CA. I can say with utter confidence that my biggest passion in life is building teams of exceptional people and inspiring them to work towards a common goal.

I am the Founder & CEO of Blacklight Group Corporation. We are a tech integrated marketing agency headquartered in Nashville, TN.

This company was built on the principles of integrity, performance, transparency, and adaption. For a long time, the word “Marketing” has had a sour taste in people’s mouth. This is because the marketing industry for far too long has been promoting values as well as business practices that are wrong. They force businesses and brands into poor contracts, they utilized out dated template service offerings which yield little to no results, they operated on a revolving door business model which allows for the misappropriation of effort and accountability.

We at Blacklight Group pride ourselves on not only having an incredible track record of success with our clients, but life long friendships with our clients as well. As a 25 year old, I am not interested in squeezing a few thousand dollars in profit today, I am interested in helping our clients generate millions of dollars over the next 30-40 years and beyond.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

While I am still young, there have been a few very impactful things which have played a drastic role in my journey thus far.

The first is the acknowledgement of mortality. From a young age I understood that my time on this Earth is limited. Thoreau famously states “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have always imagined”. Understanding that I have limited time to create the life I have always imagined has been a great motivator of mine and has pushed me to accomplish great things.

Ever since I was a little boy, my grandma has always told me “if you do not take care of yourself, nobody else will”. While she was usually just saying this to convince me to eat my vegetables, or wear a jacket in the cold, this simple saying stuck with me in regards to my dreams as well. I quickly realized that what I wanted would never just be handed to me, I surely did not want to rely on any one person or organization for that matter to provide me with the life I have always wanted. This surely played a large role in my decision to run my own company.

Lastly, a skill that I know with certainty has played the largest role in my success thus far has been the ability to bring people together. It is in our nature to coexists, this combined with a common mission and healthy environment has allowed my team and I to run as a well oiled machine. Everybody at Blacklight Group is valued, heard, appreciated, and invested in. We are a family and move as one.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

By far, without question, the most impactful things my parents have ever done for me is believe in me. I have been told my whole life that I am capable of anything, that I am a leader, that I am kind, that I inspire, that I can be whoever it is I want to be.

Whether these things are true or not is not for me to decided, however the affirmation from my parents to believe these things has certainly given me the confidence to try. And for that I could never repay them.
