We recently connected with Andre Fisher and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andre , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from my mother. Losing her in 2023 a few months before my college graduation I had to find the strength to continue on my journey. Some days were hard but it was all worth it. I also used the guiding light of my daughters to keep me pushing. One big blessing was that my 2nd daughter was born the day of graduation so I ended up having my graduation in the hospital while holding her in my arms.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Andre Fisher and I’m a basketball coach and middle school teacher. Throughout life, I always found ways to do something special but I didn’t realize my calling was to be a role model to the black and brown children who need a father figure and someone to look out for them. I have created some amazing bonds and have sent a few of my players off to college based on their education skills. I’m also a student, so I can understand some of their struggles.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a basketball coach, the three things that were very important in my growth were being receptive to criticism, asking questions, and leading by example.
The advice I have for anyone starting is to just be a sponge and ask questions. I started my coaching journey in my 30s and some days it feels like I’m behind the 8 ball but having belief in myself helps me out. I also am big on trying to learn things on my own so that when my name is called you are well prepared for whatever may come your way.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my mother did for me was teach me the value of family. She made sure that nobody went without even if that meant she had to sacrifice her portion. She always instilled God in my life so I knew early on that nothing was impossible for him.
