Meet Andre Martins

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andre Martins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andre below.

Andre, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

Risk has always been present in my life. I strongly believe that taking risks can truly become a healthy daily habit. The start of my musical career/journey was one of the biggest risks I had to take. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to turn my passion for music into a fruitful career, but once I gathered the courage to make that decision, all the pieces of my life started to fall into place. I remember the day I took that risk and dove into my passion head first. I used to work with my father and his construction business which I did not personally enjoy. I missed my alarm one morning because I had a very tiring band gig the night before, and when my father arrived to pick me up for work, I had to scramble to get ready in time. He got frustrated with me and asked “I can take you back home if you don’t feel like working?”, and then I had a crazy realization. So I turned to him and simply replied “yes”, knowing I was taking a huge risk, and he looked back at me with such an agitated gaze. He spun the car around and brought me home. Fast foward to today, and you can find my dad supporting me at many shows/events I have monthly. I couldn’t ask for a better outcome and I am so grateful that I can pursue music & Djing full time as my career. If I hadn’t risked it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. “Risk it for the Biscuit”

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am so grateful to call myself a DJ and musician. I have been playing piano for 16 years , drums for 7 years, and Djing for 5 years. I produce original music under my DJ alias ‘SatelliteFrank”, and play piano and/or drums in 4 bands. I also teach piano occasionally, and do studio session work. The bands I play in are called “Velvet45” (Drums & Keys), “Ferris Deluxe” (Drums), Alchematic (Keys), and “Jeremy Ryan & Friends” (Keys). My next move as ‘SatelliteFrank” is to release more music onto streaming platforms, release onto labels, and create/sell more merch. I am also working on booking more hybrid shows for myself. Hybrid shows or “Hybrid Sets” as I like to call them, are when I infuse my musicianship together with Djing and play piano/keyboard alongside my regular Djing. You can find my schedule on all social media under “SatelliteFrank” to find out exactly when and where I have all these upcoming shows!

My relationship with music started when I was around 8 years old. I ended up watching a DVD Movie entitled “Blue Man Group – The Complex Rock Tour Live”, and fell in love with their sound. I started rewatching the film and began playing along with the audio. I would set up pillows on my living room couch and bang them with dull skewers.

The excitement that I felt watching those talented musicians on DVD, still radiate through me today. Everytime I approach a stage to play, I feel honored to hopefully inspire someone in the crowd. Being able to transmit a certain feeling of bliss or love through the art of music is such a blessing. I am simply passing on the message/emotions from those talents that I was able to experience throughout my childhood and those I can experience now. To me, my art will outlive my body. I would love to leave behind a beautiful, fulfilling, and loving impact on the worl with my art. That is my life goal.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I have a little tip book that I have written for myself full of tips! I take it with me everyday. Here are my top 3 tips:

1. Know when not to play. (This can refer to playing an instrument, taking a gig, speaking in a conversation, etc.)

2. One failure does not outweigh the countless victories that you have achieved in your life or career.

3. Limitations boost creativity.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

My next endeavor is getting original music released onto labels under my DJ alias “SatelliteFrank”. I am also trying to play more festivals and events that include my unique “Hybrid Sets” that showcase my piano playing alongside my Djing. I would love to connect with individuals in the industry that can help me with both of these goals. Anyone that can book me or connect me with those who do something similar to me, would be much appreciated! The whole reason for these goals are to spread my positive message through my art in a much more efficient way and in a larger scale to a bigger audience. Thank you in advance.
