Meet Andrea Ewing

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Ewing a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Being able to communicate effectively is a big part of your everyday life. Especially with running a business, wether its Verbal or marketing. You have to be clear ìn what you are requesting, selling, or portraying. I have always been an extrovert. Talking to strangers or in front of a large group always came easy for me . However, it’s not about having the gift of gab, more so how you construct your conversations and know how to approach diverse situations and people. I was captain of my highschool varsity cheer team, I ran track, Gymnastics, was on a jump rope team and always signed up for work group committees. With my experience in leadership roles, being apart of diverse groups really helped structure and develop my communication skills. I am able to get my point across by accessing my audience, getting a fill for the room/group and talk about direct situations that can impact for the greater good. I use my communication skills in my marketing ads to target my audience.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Currently I work for a credit union. I’m a Debit Card Specialist. I have a kid boutique selling primarily girls clothes from sizes newborn to 14yrs. I named my business after my daughter, Ariss’ Piecez. I have been in business 4 years now. I have learned so much about running a business versus when I first started off. Not having a good solid foundation will turn your business into just a Hobbie. Learning how to market, (not just on social media) is a big part of growing your business and targeting the right audience. The most exciting part about running a business is that it is all yours! You clock in when you want, create your own visions, rules etc. Also my daughter is only 5 and she attend events with me. I am also teaching her at a young age responsibility, how to communicate with customers, and overall showing her how to run a business. I love when she is out in the field with me promoting , and passing out business cards. It shows the drive in her as well and to never give up on her dreams. As of now Ariss’ piecez will be stocking all new fall/winter inventory. We currently have a $10 or less sale on our website. Subscribe to our mailing list so you can shop new inventory first. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three skills that was most impactful in my journey are Effective communication, organization, and managing finances. Advice I can share, is to be open minded. Do not stick to what you know. Getting uncomfortable is the key to growth. Networking is apart of communicating. It can be awkward talking and selling things to complete strangers if your an introvert. Start small, sign up for business seminars via zoom. Attend pop up shops to engage or interact with customers. Go live on social media or do pre recordings on your phone about your businesse to become more comfortable being in front of an audience. Having your business organized can really make things run a lot smoother. If your not to tech savvy, create emails where you can send your receipts. For example I created a receipt email and takes pictures of all my receipts and send them to that email. It is a lot of programs that can do this for you, however if you don’t have time to manage them this is another quick solution. Lastly get in the habit of budgeting your business. Any proceeds should be spilt up, bills, marketing, payroll, but most importantly do not forget to pay yourself.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I am feeling overwhelmed and can no longer think straight. I immediately stop whatever I am doing at that time. I take a deep breath, get some water and work on word searches or I color and play music anything that is less stress and just flows. Once I have done this for 30 min to an hr I feel more at ease, less tension. I start my task again but with a more relaxed mindset. Find what you like to do either a Hobbie or something to just relax you overall. Then get back to your task , a lot of times we work better once we stop and have that moment to clear our thoughts and approach with a different mindset.
