We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I run an art studio in Second Ward called Loose Screws. I like to work in paper mache, installations, and community building. I like to center my work on experimental performance and out-of-the-box concepts. I work with different art spaces to host paper workshops on a monthly basis. I am also an organizer for Open MFA. Open MFA is an artist collective that provides community, dialogue, and cross-disciplinary collaboration for artists based in the Houston area. Loose Screws Studio is currently growing to include different disciplines & artists that work together to create all immersive art experiences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My biggest piece of advice to anyone would be to make room for yourself. I think sometimes we may not pursue opportunities or put ourselves out there in fear people won’t accept us. Or there isn’t a place to showcase what you want to give out. Making room for yourself is creating a space to do whatever you want where ever you want to do it. It’s also about finding means to make your ideas come to fruition. This may even mean paying for everything out of pocket and losing some money along the way. Making room for yourself is coming into a room where no one knows you or what you do and making your presence known. It’s showing up to something you want to be involved in and meeting the people who can put you on. It’s going out to your community and finding a way to implement yourself in a way that is beneficial. And the best way to develop making room for yourself is to keep a confident mindset and remember that there is a space for you. As an emerging artist, this has been my key to opening many doors. I have the key because I built the room!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes! Loose Screws is open to partners who want to create immersive experimental experiences. I would love to have a connection of people who would love to jump on puppeteering projects. Also, looking for dancers and musicians to do live performances with. Loose Screws is pretty much open to ideas from working artists who want to create strange things. Anyone who would like to get in contact with me can email me! [email protected]
