Meet Andrea Gibson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Gibson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.

Andrea, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

Self discipline comes from the fact that I want to be a good role model for my children and also, I realize we are very fortunate to live in a country where we can achieve anything we want with hard work. After all the odds I have overcome, I believe that self-discipline is the only way to get out of bad situations and better your life. You have to get up every day and be intentional and set a goal and work towards it every single day. When you make mistakes, you have to own them, get up the next day and keep moving forward and learn to forgive yourself. Every day we get a chance to do better and be better. No excuses.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a salon owner, and I also work in my salon as a hairstylist. I truly love waking up and going to work every day because I get to be artistic personable and make an impact on those around me. When someone comes into the hair salon, they usually have something important and we get to be part of that whether it be positive, negative, or just a moment of self-care for themselves. A hair appointment can change your whole outlook because you can leave feeling confident and ready to take on the day and also they can vent and just decompress. As the owner of my business, I love creating a work environment where my team has everything they need to thrive and feel comfortable in addition to not being overworked and get to be creative and then go home and have a great work/life balance. My team is just important to me as the customers because I need them to be happy to create happy customers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three things that have made an impact on my journey are 1. The fact that I am self-made. My family were not equipped to help me go off to college or have the knowledge on how to even guide me as a young adult. I am grateful for that because I was able to figure a lot of things out on my own and have become independent. I am grateful for the struggle because I know anything can be achieved even with lots of mistakes along the way. 2. Having some great friends that are always there for me and would offer advice and listen during the struggles. 3. Investing in great education and being intentional about staying current and evolving in my business and being flexible when things change and learning to evolve.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Over the past 12 months, I have learned to set stronger boundaries and be less available. I love my job and I love working hard but when I’m not at work, it’s important to have self-care. For me when I get overwhelmed, I have hobbies that I enjoy such as working out reading, listening to audiobooks and traveling. I also have stopped people pleasing as much and try to be my authentic self. It’s important to strive to do a good job, but also value your time and self-worth at the same time.
