Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrea Guth Vega. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Andrea, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Loved this question because it gets me to talk about the people I admire the most! Growing up I was blessed to be raised by the most resilient and brave people in this world. My parents have always given me and my brothers the most genuine example of resilience and determination with every single thing they do. At times they were juggling multiple jobs and even self owned businesses to be able to give us nothing but the best. They’ve always been transparent with us, making us understand that great effort and sacrifices come with great achievements.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Andrea Guth, I was born and raised in San Jose Costa Rica within a family of designers. Since a young age I’ve always admired and been fascinated by the impact and influence of design in our day to day experience. From simplifying daily activities to groundbreaking innovation, design has the power of transforming and improving the world. With the clear goal of attending The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since an early age, I had a lot of work to do to make it possible. From participating in design challenges since high school, to completing the International baccalaureate (IB diploma) I knew I had to make myself stand out to be able to get a great scholarship and fulfill my dream. Starting in 2018, my time at SCAD was filled with incredible experiences, learnings and challenges. With various in-school and international awards such as start-up competitions, Indigo awards and the prestigious RedDot design award, I made my way through college and in 2022 I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in User Experience Design from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
Currently I’m on a long term contract with Microsoft working as a UX designer in their Developer Division. For the past two years I’ve been the designated designer for one of their flagship products. Working on redesigning the website, designing swag, presentation templates, etc. Even though designing is my job, I also enjoy it as my hobby. Design competitions have always been an important element in my creative journey and they still are. More recently I participated and won a design challenge to design the holiday bags used in Dashdoor deliveries for the famous Magnolia Bakery in New York. As you can see, I’m always excited to get my hands on any challenge that comes my way!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, problem solving and empathy.
My advice would be to always stay true to ourself, and don’t let any obstacle discourage you. It is important to have loved ones around you to encourage you, as well as for you to encourage them.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Luckily I can say there have been plenty, but if I had to choose I would say doing everyhting to have me graduate from the best school in Costa Rica. Thanks to their incredible efforts and even sacrifices, they were able to have their three kids graduate from the most prestigious school in our home country, opening doors that would lead us to were we are today as professionals.
