Meet Andrea Harris- Walker

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrea Harris- Walker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Andrea, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I’ve always been deeply ingrained in the world of sports, having dedicated myself to basketball and track and field from a young age.

I adhered to a rigorous training regimen – my mornings began at 5 a.m.

Aside from very intentional athletic training, I was often subjected to criticism about my height and weight. I was close to 6-Foot tall in elementary school. These experiences were instrumental in cultivating my resilience.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the CEO of Bacon Magazine, which stands proudly as a non-profit entity with a mission to uphold and celebrate the positive portrayal of black women. Our publication is a business-centric platform, spotlighting women who are making waves in the world of business, while also providing valuable resources, business education, and insights into wellness.

As we basked in the joy of our one-year anniversary, we unveiled our fifth issue, featuring an exciting collaboration with none other than Vanessa Simmons. In our journey thus far, we’ve been privileged to provide over $230,000 worth of complimentary advertising space to support black-owned enterprises.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Cultivating a sense of self-worth is vital. Recognize your own importance, understand your impact in the world, and step into that space with confidence.

Nurturing one’s inner strength, shaping desired feelings and experiences, and learning to project these into the external world is a critical endeavor. This personal growth is crucial, particularly for those leading others, whether in a community or a business setting.

Lastly, a fundamental skill set to develop in business is comprehensive operational knowledge. Many entrepreneurs excel in their craft but lack an understanding of business operations, from backend processes to marketing strategies. Talent alone is insufficient; it must be paired with sound business practices and a thorough understanding of how to manage a business effectively.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I encourage individuals to reach out via email with their thoughts and ideas. We often review emails even if our response isn’t immediate, and the way you present yourself through your press or brand kit can significantly influence our impression.
