Meet Andrea Hinton

We were lucky to catch up with Andrea Hinton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

Well I would have to say I get my work ethic from my parents. It think it comes with the genes as well as the environment that you are raised in My parents always had a strong work ethic. Growing up in a big household, as the oldest, my parents worked a lot so you also learn to become independent pretty quickly. They raised 6 girls so money was tight. I knew if I wanted something that I had to work for it myself. Our work ethic also comes with integrity. I grew up with the characteristics of being honest and fair. I want to provide the best services to my clients.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a mental health nurse practitioner. I started out as a nurse 19 years ago and have worked in various areas of nursing before settling down into the mental health field. My background helps me provide a holistic approach when treating clients with mental health conditions. I provide medication management for conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar, ADHD children, as well as aggressive behaviors in children or adolescents. I incorporate natural supplements as well as prescribed medications when appropriate. I love mental health. Everyone has their own story or past and I am here to help them with their journey to optimize their mental well-being.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

This is a tough one because there are so many. First of all, you need to have a passion to work in mental health or you will not show up for your clients. You must come from a place of non judgment. You are there to listen, support, and inform individuals with the knowledge base to empower themselves when managing their mental health. Last but not least, never ever stop learning because you want to bring your clients the latest, most up-to-date treatments based off of what the evidence shows is most effective.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Multiple people who started out in this field ahead of me. They allow me to pick their brains whenever I need them. For certain situations I may have not been familiar with, I would ask more than one individual how they would approach the situation because well there can be more than one way of doing things and having multiple perspectives from the experts allows you to grow significantly in your knowledge or skills.
