We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Piontkovski a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Being in the public eye is not an easy job. Whatever you do, your posts, your point of view, your decisions, your work, or your life style, will attract the attention and support of people, but you will also have to learn how to deal with some of the most hateful comments you can imagine. There will always be haters and difficult people out there and you can’t simply give up or get discouraged because of their negativity.
Do not get me wrong, an advice and good feedback is always positive for you to grow, learn and get better. Remember, we do not know everything and we are not perfect. But when you have people simply judging you, criticizing you and projecting their insecurities, their negativity, and their fears onto your life, then you have to be strong, believe in yourself and keep going.
When I failed the bar exam, my then boss told me to quit. It was hurtful, but I did not listen to him, I listened to my heart. So I kept going. When I started my business, I received messages from people I did not even know criticizing me for how I dressed or posed because in their opinion, I did not look like a lawyer. Well, believe it or not, I built my brand by being me and having my own style and my clients trust me for my knowledge, my experience, my education, not for how I dress. When I started recording videos for social media, I received comments against my accent. But that did not stop me, I kept creating content and the accent is one of the many things that make me unique because it shows I am an immigrant who became an immigration attorney.
These examples show you that you have to keep taking risks without the fear of what others could think of you. “You can either be judged because you created something or ignored because you left your greatness inside of you.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am the CEO of my law firm: Piontkovski Immigration Law and 90% of practice is focused on Immigration Law. I proudly represent clients all over the country and I hold consultations via zoom with people all over the world. In the past couple of years I have helped, among others, professionals with exceptional abilities, athletes, musicians, engaged or married couples, victims of domestic violence, business people, students, families, Hispanics and not Hispanics, military members, etc. I love what I do and my clients know it. I do my job with passion and dedication and I will keep doing it this way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Strong Mindset: You are what you tell your brain you are. Think you can, and you are half way there. 2. Persistence: You will fail like everyone else. But failing does not define you, what defines your character is how you got up and kept trying. I failed the Bar Exam 5 times and passed on my 6th attempt. Yet, I have a successful business. Why? People will not remember me as a loser. People will remember me as the woman who had resilience and believed in herself.
3. Curiosity: We live in a world moved by phones and technology. So instead of scrolling downs without purpose, try to use the tools you have available to learn new skills, to improve what you do and to become better and better.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Compound Effect which is based on the principle that decisions shape your destiny. Little, everyday decisions will either take you to the life you desire or to disaster by default.
