We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrea Serrano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrea, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Life is too short to dwell in negative thoughts. The more I live in a positive mindset, the more beautiful people and experiences cross my path.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Wardrobe Stylist, Producer, Content Creator, and Event Host. Based in Charleston, South Carolina, I help clients feel beautiful from the inside out and successfully position lifestyle brands in the local and global markets through content creation and social media. I’m still so passionate about being in the fashion industry after 28 years in the industry. I’m very grateful that I get to do what I do in such a beautiful city. Creative collaboration is really where my passion is and I continuously have the opportunity to provide talented people with work . I create ecosystems of opportunities that elevate and engage human connection. I’m also a connector. Introducing people for the benefit of their success and well being is my jam.
I have so many fun and exciting things on the horizon. I’m currently working with Macy’s and Ford on campaigns as an influencer. I’m also going to the Meta headquarters in NYC for an Instagram workshop in September. Any chance where I can still learn and challenge myself in this industry is a huge win for me.
Giving back to the Charleston community gives me so much purpose. I’m hosting a shopping event at Veronica Beard in Charleston for my friend who recently found out she has lung cancer. My mother died of lung cancer so I’m on the board for the American Lung Association. We throw a super fun event called Lipsync for Lungs in February. I’m also hosting a breast cancer awareness fashion show on Oct 7th at Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre. All of the models are breast cancer survivors and 100% of the proceeds go to Roper St. Francis Healthcare breast cancer program.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1.) Qualities – work hard, network, be kind, be resilient, persevere, be resourceful, and most importantly be a dreamer.
2.) Skills – Stay up on the current trends in fashion and technology. Be open to expanding your skill set from wardrobe styling to prop styling, and creative direction.
3.) Areas of knowledge – study fashion, music, art, and movies from the past. The current trends are always referencing something from the past.
The best advice I can give is to get the most experience you can get. Find a mentor, assist, volunteer, stay busy and productive, and never be afraid to keep on putting yourself out there!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents always encouraged my creativity. I would style outfits for my mom when I was younger and play store. My parents encouraged my passion for fashion and my father really pushed me to go to college in Miami to study fashion merchandising.
