We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrea Serrano Villaverde. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrea below.
Andrea, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my journey. Well, this resilience ability is basically a family heirloom. When life got tough, they weren’t afraid to fight for their goals. This resilience led them to venture to cities like Paris or London, where they achieved remarkable things, starting anew. They also encountered difficulties in their new cities. But here’s the best part: they approached each obstacle as a game, a test to pass. Failure was not an option; it was simply a stumbling block on the path to achievement. As a result, I absorbed that thinking like a sponge.
Then there’s my French mother, who says things like “impossible n’est pas français” – essentially, nothing is impossible for the French. That sentence became my spark of hope. Fast forward to my career as an Art Director, I’ve realized that resilience isn’t about flashy victories but more about a quiet determination to learn and adapt.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I frequently say that advertising found me by chance, as my first plan was to study medicine. However, fate intervened when a university representative visited my school and introduced me to the subject of advertising, piqued my attention. Following additional study, I came across an advertising that acted as a spark, causing me to reevaluate my professional path. Since that fateful decision in 2016, I’ve been absorbed in the position of Art Director. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of working with a diverse range of prestigious clients, including Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Microsoft, American Express, and Mercedes-Benz, through numerous worldwide agencies including as MRM, Ogilvy, and Publicis. My work mindset is around a never-ending desire to create unique and disruptive ideas that resonate and inspire brand conversations. My goal is to effect change or evoke strong emotions. I am a big believer that art, in whatever form, should evoke emotions in the spectator, resulting in a meaningful and profound experience.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Easy! Curiosity, resilience and hard work. To those just starting out, I’d advise them to stay curious, be resilient, and work hard. These qualities form a solid foundation for growth and success. Embrace the challenges, keep that inquisitive spirit alive, and let your work speak for itself. The journey may not always be easy, but it will undoubtedly be worth it.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When overwhelm hits, I’m all about hitting pause. Taking a walk with my favorite tunes is my go-to move. It’s like a quick mental reset. My advice? Listen to what your body’s saying. If it needs a break, give it that breather. Simple as that.
