Meet Andrea Yordanova

We were lucky to catch up with Andrea Yordanova recently and have shared our conversation below.

Andrea, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Good question! As an actor, keeping my creativity alive involves a continuous and dynamic process of exploration and self-renewal. I immerse myself in diverse experiences by traveling, attending theater productions, films, and art exhibits, which broaden my understanding of different cultures and human behaviors. I maintain a habit of reading extensively – self-improvement books, plays, screenplays—and conducting deep research for each role that I have to play, which helps me build authentic characters.

Engaging in physical activities like pilates, dance, and martial arts also helps a lot. Meditation enhances my mental clarity and emotional balance. I frequently collaborate with fellow creatives, drawing inspiration from their insights and experiences. Personal reflection and journaling allow me to explore my inner world, and taking creative risks, such as experimenting with new acting styles, pushes me to grow.

Ultimately, finding joy in everyday moments and staying curious about the world around me ensures that my creativity remains vibrant and evolving. This holistic approach keeps my passion for acting alive and deeply fulfilling.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’ve been acting for the past 14 years, starting in my home country- Bulgaria. Since that moment, when I was 8 years old, I knew there wasn’t anything else I’d want to do and I just kept going.
Acting makes me excited. I’m happy I get the chance to share my craft and emotions with the world. I recently had my movie ‘First Light’ selected for a festival across the world – in India. For me, that’s very exciting. I know that many people would be able to recognize themselves in the situation and the characters my co-star, Dip Patel, and I are portraying. Being selected for the Pune Short Film Festival means a lot because this means we got to tell our story in a way that everyone around the globe would be able to understand or even see themselves in our characters.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Definitely discipline, hard work and the love for the craft. I truly believe that if you don’t really like acting but you just want to do it for the fame it’s just not going to work out. I’m pretty sure, that all of the art forms have to come from the heart, if not it’s just not going to hit the same. Especially for the audience.
What I’d recommend for people starting out is to just do what they love. If you have the opportunity to take acting classes – do. Read good books, plays. Watch good movies. Watch interviews with already established actors, they give very good advices.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was supporting my passion for acting by sending me to my dream school in New York, the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Their unwavering belief in my talent and their willingness to invest in my education provided me with the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry. This experience not only honed my craft but also opened doors to invaluable connections and insights, shaping me into the actor I am today. Their support has been the foundation of my career and my greatest source of inspiration.
