Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Andrew Adkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Andrew, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I probably get it from my mother. I grew up with a certain drive and assertiveness instilled into me. She was always so supportive and encouraging of what I found interests in, what I felt passionate about. My love of music and that inner flame that ignites, and drives everything that I feel passionate towards comes from her, absolutely!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a songwriter, and producer in Nashville, TN. I grew up in Northwestern, Ohio. I was drawn towards a career of being in bands, touring, getting attention, getting girls, partying, and making money from doing what I love. However, the further my journey has led me, the more I have grown in love with the process of creation than anything else. The magic of producing the spark that begins in your mind, and seeing it become reality right before you The excessive stuff got old very quickly. I’m in this thing for life, but I have become so tired of the industry aspect—the partying, the schmoozing—all of that stuff has run its course for me. My happy place these days is in my studio, creating music, bringing it to life, and composing music for TV and films. As long as I can make enough money to live and be comfortable, that’s all I want. I do not care about being in the spotlight or any of the attention that goes along with all of that garbage!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first thing that comes to mind is: don’t fall for all that seems too good to be true, because it always is! Read the fine print—literally, and metaphorically. Don’t get caught up in the hype—the hype that people build around you, or the hype people build around themselves. It’s the music business, so always be cognizant that you’re in it to make money for yourself and for others. Take nothing personally if it falls within the realm of the industry. Always learn from and pay attention to everyone who has gone before you. Tread that fine line when it comes to being wise and gullible; learn all from within that bubble —learn from all of the mistakes made and from the path you have chosen.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Gave me my first guitar for my 2nd Christmas.
