We recently connected with Andrew Chayra and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my parents. Watching them work tirelessly to build a life for me instilled in me the drive to keep pushing forward. They worked day and night to give me the best opportunities, and that dedication fuels my own. It’s about being the first one up and the last one to go to bed. Seeing my parents push themselves daily gave me the work ethic I need to succeed in running my business.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I run a clothing company called The World Is Small, inspired by the idea that in Los Angeles, everyone is connected—whether through school, summer camp, or sports. The concept was born one night after a college party when I turned to my roommate and said, “The World Is Small, Los Angeles is smaller.”
All our products are proudly made in Los Angeles using local vendors, with the goal of supporting our community by working with the people who call this city home. We collaborate extensively with local talent, from our models to our videographers and photographers. Additionally, a portion of our profits each season is donated to various nonprofits in Los Angeles.
Our Fall/Winter collection launches on September 12th, 2024, at 12 PM PST.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have the most impact on success are resilience, discipline, and a bit of delusion. To run a business, you have to wake up every day and push yourself forward, even when the path ahead is unclear. It’s essential to keep going because, for every 100 setbacks, there’s that one win. Discipline is just as crucial—you need to stay focused and committed to your vision. Laziness isn’t an option; you must keep your eye on the goal.
But the most important quality is a touch of delusion. You have to dream big and reach for the stars, believing in yourself with unwavering confidence, even when others might not see the vision.
The best way to cultivate these qualities is to trust yourself. Believe in your decisions, and approach every choice with confidence and conviction.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed and like the world is closing in, I shut my computer and head outside. I clear my head by hitting the gym or going for a walk—anything to get my heart pumping and my blood flowing. My advice? Find something that helps you disconnect. Step away, clear your mind, and take in the world around you.
