We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andrew Lux. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andrew below.
Andrew, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence? hahaha I mean if I’m being honest, any confidence you see in me is learned. By that I mean I had to try a lot of different things in my life to fail and succeed in before believing I’m good at it. I’ve tried fire fighting, football, snowboard instructing, golf, swim, surfing, band, enlisting in military, djing and finally music production to commit to what I really love which is music! It wasnt until I got my first big label release on nightbass when I finally said, oh damn I might be good at this. Then my remixes started gaining traction and once Skrillex played my In Da Ghetto remix in Time Square with Fred Again and Four Tet I thought…. okay maybe I really am good at this haha I still doubt myself from time to time but feeling this way is normal and I always come back around. It’s part of the process to self doubt and even healthy because it can push you to do better, if you know how to use it in a healthy way.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Right now is the most “Me” my music has ever been, if that makes any sense? Like I feel my creativity has been able to really be pushed because of mainly my breakthroughs in sound design and now using my own vocals and lyrics to write about anything I want, say eating Festival Fries at 3am! Vocals have been huge for me lately and I’ve been using AI to make my vocals sound both male and female. I recently put out that song “Festival Fries” having a male and female singer doing a duet in one of the verse’s, which is incredible and I’ve never been able to do! I think using AI in vocals is amazing just how much I can now sounds like multiple people and in very good quality. I got some criticism when I posed a video on how to do it, but I almost take that as a positive. In music and technology (tech in general) if people hate on something new and groundbreaking, it usually means its going to be the next big thing. Auto-tune is a great example of this.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Learning to fail and take away from it, try new things and don’t follow trends, and produce produce produce. You learn more from failures than success’s but be sure you’re actually learning from them rather than blaming an algorithm or peoples tastes. Trends work for some, but I see a lot of them come off unauthentic. Use trends as a way to see what works and then make an original idea from it. And I believe you have to produce those “okay” or “crappy” songs to get to the gold ones. The more music you make, the more you learn from every song and what techniques you want to use for the next one.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I take a break. I used to think taking breaks wouldn’t help, like how stretching before and after workouts is lame and I don’t have time for it. But stretching is hugely important in fitness and so are breaks in music. Some of the best ideas come from taking a break then coming back to my project with a fresh mind. I try to work on music at least an hour a day, and if nothing comes then I take time off and not push it. I treat creativity like a living being. You gotta respect its own personal time and value, let it relax and when its ready it will come back to you. And yes I believe in Ghosts and Aliens haha
