We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrew Lux a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I had such bad writers block once, I told my mentor that I just cant think of anything and maybe my spark is gone. This dude told me straight up “well, being an artist isn’t for everyone”. I got so pissed I wrote three songs that week to shove in his face haha. Although funny, I did find I do well under pressure. I’ve also come out of it through attending concerts or listening to different genres. If hear something in reggae like a Djembe drum, I throw it into a song I’m working on and it can turn out really dope. But I get alot of ideas from everyday things and write them down on my notes app. Like I was in a hotel room with some friends and wanted a beer from the mini bar. I asked if it was cool, and he said “yea, just charge it to the room” and bam, we had a song yea about charging liquor and food to a hotel room party. All in all, every time I get stuck in the block I know I’ve had this experience before and always came out of it eventually.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
So this year I’m going to focus on making music and content that’s 1000% more fun, energetic, and me than last year. A big part of why I didn’t self release music last year was because of the idea most artists have, and that’s if you don’t have label releases you aren’t doing it right. Labels are amazing because it gives you the opportunity to be apart of your favorite artists projects so I think they’re 100% profitable to your brand, but those labels don’t always want to sign someone if they have nothing to show for it yet. I was told recently by my mentor that self releasing is something we should all be doing so listeners can understand the development of your sound and labels notice you push out good music and content frequently. So yea, excited to put out some crazy weird stuff for everyone and really pushing my creative sound!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities I picked up would be listening, patience, and an irrational sense of optimism. Listening because you learn more from others when you hear their advice and take in their experience. Patience because although we see many artist blow up out of no where, usually its not the case. They put in time and effort to get to a point where you see them now, and in this day in age all it takes is one song. Keep moving forward, you cant fail if you never quit. And optimism because you really just gotta be positive for no other reason than its the best way to think. I’ve had my moments where that flame of hope was almost gone (not even music related) but you always come out of it stronger. If you’re upset you aren’t headlining a festival or getting viral hits, this career might not be for you. You should just enjoy music because of how good it feels to create something. Holy hell that was cheesy but I mean it. So stay positive and just go for it, because there’s people less qualified than you doing the things you wanna just because they believed in themselves and took a risk.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Okay here’s what I do… I get some Ben & Jerry’s, call my mom and cry haha. But really I’d probably call my mom. I’m not a big talker so usually I put that energy in music, gym, or nostalgic video games like Half Life 2. But when you’re in the low low who you gunna call? Momma.
