We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Andrew Tyson Thomson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew Tyson, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Thank you for giving me your time and attention. Regarding my life events played out in great detail. I will divulge as much as I can without losing my perspective and remaining accurate.
What is mental health? Is it a sickness or illness to be cured? Is it a disorder to be reorganized and revealed in its true form? Is it lifelong or permanent. There are many questions I ask myself for the experiences I have been through with mental worlds. Some of the display of emotions are ranged from mania, auditory and visual delusions, anger, uncontrolled body movements, uncomfortable consciousness, sensory overload, anxiety breaks, mental breakdowns, loss, grief to the upper range far from despair. There are many negative and positive attributes living our journey and enduring struggle has on the mind.
To say I have overcame the peripheral and fought through diseases is extreme. Before naming any mental illnesses specifically, I like to take a chance to release stigma attached to struggle. We all go through the worst events and strive to survive better than before, and to notice growth of a person as time changes them is difficult. Access and understand from a wise outlook rather than falling into foolishness.
Does the heart grow stronger? Does the soul find oneness at its core? Does the behavior become purified and conscious of itself seeing itself as another observer? I’m at the point in my life where you have more questions than answers and the only way to find the answers is alone, spiritually and creatively. Family support is key to strengthening the weak as they need help, but inner change comes from holding close the flame of love over fear.
I start off at 18 years old trying to self actualize in a world where philosophical ideas and youth energy collide in a fallen world. There begins conflict from not making the right decisions. Then, I followed a path of challenge and learning what the word “no” means to each of us. The absence of needs of desire will eventually lead to yearning for something that cannot be achieved. The hope to attain something that may be possible feeds the ego and self to need satisfaction.
As I matured through college I learned to focus on more than what I loved, but also becoming able to see dislike or the full range of empathy. Using life to find new life after darkness is the story most face solitarily. If the reflecting world around me did not meet my expectations, I would try to push the limit to see the possibility of a break through. Each time may have seemed like an illusion of self grandeur, but raising yourself up and getting used to it is key. Looking to the horizon after falling flat on my back. Retracing to keep what matters and to cherish the unlimited ever changing world around me.
I faced the adversary and was able to balance my mind after years of medication. The adversary was myself and now I am medication free with a healthy diet and balance to living everyday. Therapy is very beneficial and many people need medication to overcome there mental illness, but I recommend research and trial and error. Know your body and know your mind. Become fully aware of your internal workings to mirror how you feel on the inside.
I maintain a diet, discipline the heart with exercise, and keep confidence by my side. Self doubt can be crippling for any person enduring that struggle, but there is a way out. It’s more than being driven to having a self motivation drive to no longer hate yourself or hate the world around us. Not everything can be changed by one person’s experience, but it can offer some perspective into growth of the conscious being. The human falling through life to one day stop and stand firm.
Live beyond the diagnosis and focus on healing spiritually to work from both sides of the spectrum of psychological influences. Peace and quiet doesn’t always work for bitterness and resentment. Calm energy becomes much stronger than that of forceful willpower. The iron thumb cannot always press down against the need and be cured. Sometimes it feels like passing through many metaphorical deaths, transformations, rebirths, and new life over and over to get it right. Knowing and trusting things are moving in the right direction I went through recovery and rehabilitation many times.
The thing that survives and keeps me moving now is faith, family, and freedom. Whether it was starting over from a bad relationship or totaling your car again, the endurance and trials will mold the self into what it is now. I am who I am now because I left when I was not loved and went where I knew I belonged. A place of peace and growth happens through rebirth or being reborn many way through life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Currently, I am an author known as Andrew Tyson with my first book titled, “Convictions, Dialects, and Separations: Communications of the Soul,” which is also in the Library of Congress. Photography was my passion for many years so I continue to use it to create new art through framed works, but writing a new book has been my main focus. The newest book planned to be published is titled, “The Instrincisist,” is in the works as one of my masterpieces in life. This has been years to create and perfect takes time to see to fruition. I am closer to reaching my next publishing goal each year as I make necessary edits and choices. To work completely on creativity is my passion, but I have to afford my lifestyle with a career as an Investigator in the Bio Tech industry. The arts are a market of their own to live and thrive in with strength and be successful.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. First quality is benevolence. Being meek and kind first seemed like a weakness in societal standards, but became as strong as courage. To be kind in the face of the opposing world is needed during this time. Benevolence brings heart to yourself and then it can be share with others. To hold the soft light may seem like a fall feet, but is actually the strongest thing I know to be nice at all times because not everything can be controlled. Be honest but do not stifle how you think of yourself. This is my time to carry the weight of living on my shoulder like everyone else.
2. Surrender or trust in the spiritual because if family is at turmoil, the spirit will find a way to pull itself out. The waters of life swirl around our bodies, but the living waters within can be still. Home is wherever you are and your safety relies on the unfolding choices to do the right thing at the right time. Giving in does not always mean that I am giving up. If your world collapses, be the hope you wish to see. If not me, then who? That is the main question to lead by trusting the ways will work and have meaning.
3. An area most impacted by my way of thinking, is my work life home balance. Freethinking and living with unconventional information can be daunting if you investigate further than you should know per chance. There is an imagination wall or a ceiling to heightened awareness or raised consciousness. Infinity may not be able to be grasped but the stream of consciousness can flow as a gentle stream instead of a rapid waterfall or endless oceans. Dreaming through it all becomes my writing style more and I am eager to share, and I am curious always how to improve my potential for success. After hitting a bad stage, I began to notice how to move the characters to see them up for my next stage. There is always life after death.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Looking to collaborate with a publishing agent to get the influence on pitching my book. In order to release a book, it needs to have great timing and sale itself. Marketing for Independent artist and authors is always appreciated as we all seek to make a name for ourselves.
