Meet Andy Michel

We were lucky to catch up with Andy Michel recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Andy, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Being the only one in the room can feel intimidating, but I’ve learned to see it as an opportunity to stand out. Whether I’m stepping into a meeting as a marketing professional or showing up to an event as a content creator, I walk in with the mindset that I already belong there. Some might call it being delusional, but I think of it as stepping into the person I aspire to be.

I remind myself that I was invited for a reason. Out of countless creators and marketers out there, my perspective and creativity earned me a seat at the table. That keeps me focused on what I bring: strategy, storytelling and a point of view that no one else can replicate. Instead of shrinking, I share ideas, build relationships and treat every room as proof that I deserve to be there, even if I am the only one who looks like me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a content creator and digital marketing professional based in San Antonio, where I focus on storytelling that connects people to brands and experiences in a meaningful way. My work blends creativity and strategy, whether I’m developing campaigns for businesses, creating engaging social content, or collaborating with organizations like the Diablos Outsports Association, where I serve as Director of Marketing and Social Media.

What excites me most is the ability to share stories that feel authentic and relatable while still driving results. As a Latino and member of the LGBTQ+ community, I bring a perspective that celebrates diversity and representation, which I believe is essential in both marketing and content creation today.

Right now, I’m expanding my personal brand, The Virgo Andy, to include new collaborations with lifestyle, wellness, and entertainment partners. I love working with brands that align with my values and allow me to create content that inspires, entertains, and builds genuine connections with my audience.

My goal is always to create work that not only stands out but also makes people feel seen. Whether it’s a marketing campaign, a social post, or a community event, I want every project to leave a lasting impression.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities have shaped my journey the most: a commitment to continuous learning, the willingness to fail and try again, and the ability to build genuine connections.

The world of content creation and marketing changes constantly, so staying curious and open to learning has been essential. I make it a priority to study new trends, platforms, and tools so I can keep evolving instead of getting stuck in one way of doing things.

Equally important is being willing to fail. Some of my best ideas started as experiments that didn’t work out at first. Failure can feel uncomfortable, but it’s also where growth and creativity happen.

Finally, relationships matter. Whether it’s connecting with an audience, a client, or a community, success comes from listening, collaborating, and showing up authentically.

For anyone starting out, I’d say embrace learning as a lifelong habit, take risks even when they might not work, and focus on people as much as strategy. Those three things will carry you through every stage of your journey.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, I’m always excited to connect and collaborate, especially with small local businesses that may feel overwhelmed managing social media or marketing while running their day-to-day operations. I love helping businesses navigate social media strategy, influencer marketing, FTC guidelines, and content creation in a way that feels manageable and effective.

If you’re a small business owner looking for guidance or collaboration, I’d love to hear from you. You can reach me at [email protected], and we can explore how to grow your brand and share your story with the right audience.
