We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Andy Shank. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Andy below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Andy with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I would definitely say my work ethic comes from my parents. They were both incredibly hardworking and taught me the importance of doing your best, no matter the task. I’ve always been someone who dislikes wasting time or sitting idle. When I take on a project, I put in my best effort to ensure it’s done right the first time, which minimizes the need to go back and redo it. This approach not only saves time but also allows me to be fully present and learn from any challenges that arise. When things don’t go as planned, I find it easier to make adjustments and improve because I’ve already laid a solid foundation. I also have a natural drive—a kind of restless energy—that pushes me to stay productive and creative. It’s that feeling of accomplishment that keeps me motivated and inspired.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Andy Shank, and I created Shank Supply Co. to fulfill a long-time creative mission. Growing up immersed in skateboarding and graffiti culture, creativity and innovation were central to my life. I’ve always had a strong desire to be my own boss and create something meaningful for people.
In the late ’90s, before college, I started Fatkap Clothing—a graffiti-inspired clothing line that catered to the skateboarding, graffiti, and music countercultures. Although it only lasted a few years, it was one of the most exciting and formative experiences of my life.
Afterward, I pursued a BFA from Tyler School of Art and later earned a master’s degree in education from Cabrini College. I went on to become an art teacher, where I discovered my passion for building relationships and inspiring young people to find joy in art. Problem-solving, creative self-expression, and a “can-do” attitude have always been a part of who I am.
While I’ve spent years growing my family and career as an art educator, I eventually realized something was missing—a creative outlet that could also satisfy my entrepreneurial spirit. As an art teacher, I wear an apron every day, but I struggled to find one that met both my functional needs and personal style. With some sewing experience, I decided to make my own, and when I finally put it on, it just felt right. That was my lightbulb moment. When people began noticing and asking about it, I realized this could be something bigger—a business that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and practicality.
As a solo business owner, I now wear many hats while focusing on building Shank Supply Co. thoughtfully and sustainably. My goal has always been to ensure the quality of my products never suffers. In a world dominated by fast fashion and disposable goods, I take pride in creating products that are built to last. Every apron is made with care, attention to detail, and the highest quality materials, backed by a lifetime guarantee.
Shank Supply Co. specializes in aprons designed for makers in all fields—art teachers, shop teachers, artists, woodworkers, hairstylists, barbers, restaurants, and bars. Our aprons are made to give the wearer a sense of confidence, quality, and individuality, allowing them to focus on what they do best: create. Beyond aprons, we love taking on custom projects, like bags, tool rolls, and anything our customers dream up.
My ultimate vision is to turn Shank Supply Co. into a major name in the creative industries while giving back to the communities that have shaped me. I’m excited about making an impact and helping others feel great about what they wear while they create.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities that have helped me along my journey—now that’s a tough one. First and foremost, you’ve got to believe in yourself. Growing up, my family was supportive in many ways, but they weren’t ones to give much praise or show pride in accomplishments. That made it hard for me to feel a sense of success or create without subconsciously seeking approval. It took me far too long to realize that I don’t need anyone else’s validation. I’ve put in the work, I have a strong sense of aesthetics, and I’m true to my craft. Worrying about others’ perceptions of what I make is something I’ve finally let go of.
Second, I believe it’s crucial to be able to switch from creator to critic in a healthy and honest way. It’s essential to evaluate your work objectively and ask yourself if it’s truly your best—especially when you’re making a product that others will use. You have to care about the consumer and their experience.
Lastly, it’s so important to have fun and be present in what you’re doing. If you’re not enjoying your craft, then what’s the point? If you’re in it solely for the money, it’s going to be hard to keep going. But if you’re doing it because you love it, because it brings you joy, and because you’re helping others or building a community around your work, then that’s what really matters.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to collaborate and create something new. I’m especially interested in working with people connected to creative industries or those who can help introduce my aprons and products to a wider audience. I love seeing my aprons on the people who wear them everyday while working their craft made possibly through the various lenses of social media. It is really cool to be an accessory to their success and creative outlet.
Last year, I had the chance to collaborate with a professional skateboarder who’s also built a name for himself with his cooking venture. Together, we created a limited-edition apron series for his fans, which was an exciting and rewarding project. I’d love to do more collaborations like that in the future. More recently I worked with a professional drummer to design a custom drum stick bag for him to take his drum sticks on tours and gigs, which was another really cool experience.
It would also be amazing to connect with professionals in other fields or even see my aprons featured on TV shows or other platforms. Collaborating with others not only pushes my creativity but also opens doors to new ideas and possibilities. I’m always open to hearing from like-minded people who want to build something unique together.
