We recently connected with Angel Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
For me, finding purpose has always been about learning how to lean into the things that both come naturally to me and genuinely feel like an extension of who I am.
I grew up playing different sports and becoming quite athletic. As an early adult, that evolved into a career in personal training that was mostly focused on helping women lose weight in a healthy way.
However, as my own journey changed, so did my views on wellness and how I wanted to show up in the world – which made a huge impact on how I wanted to support other women.
Finding my purpose has been less about the ‘finding’ and more about giving myself permission to be who I am and share the work that truly changes lives..
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I had been healthy, athletic even, most of my life. But at the age of 40, I was hit with an autoimmune disease diagnosis that literally knocked the wind out of me – physically and mentally.
As a longtime personal trainer and nutritionist, I was ashamed; terrified that having a chronic illness would cost me the trust and credibility I’d built throughout my career.
I was afraid of living with the side effects of medication and even more so of the impact of the disease itself. But this wasn’t the first challenge I’d been faced with. And I was fiercely determined to avoid becoming a statistic.
Over the last 8 years, I’ve taken a deep dive into hormone-focused nutrition and radically shifted my idea of what it means to look, live and feel healthy.
I put what I’d learned into practice; I embraced the idea of healthy vibes beyond a temporary ‘diet’ and despite what doctors insisted would be my fate, I slowly helped my body begin to heal.
Today, with my wellness coaching business: Simply Defined Fitness, I help women use strategic nutrition, fitness and mindfulness to conquer their thyroid and hormone struggles, beat the odds and find their unique, healthy vibes.
I’m determined to change the face and conversation around wellness.
That’s why I recently launched a brand new pop-up yoga concept called FLOW: Hip Hop Yoga. It’s the ultimate blend of zen and beats – combining traditional vinyasa yoga with your favorite hip hop tracks and afro-beats.
Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned yogi, this yoga experience is a vibe that will a special imprint on your practice.
Right now, FLOW: Hip Hop Yoga is popping up in and around Miami, FL so if you’re a local or vacationing yogi, come flow!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are:
Determination: this allowed me to stay focused on my goals even when I experienced setbacks.
Willingness to Evolve: often I had to unlearn and relearn things and even change my approach in order to reach my goals.
Patience: This has always been tough for me – but giving myself and my work time to become what it’s meant to be, learning how to not force things.
The best advice I’d offer to anyone wanting to develop these qualities is not to shy away from them. Often the qualities or skills that are toughest for us, are the ones we need to spend more time on. Determination isn’t hard for me, but there was a time when I was resistant to change and the art of ‘waiting’.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz has had a huge impact on me.
One of the biggest takeaways for me is the idea that we all exist and operate based on agreements that we’ve made with ourselves. Agreements that come from our own unique life experiences. Agreements that often have nothing to do with others.
It allowed me to stop taking things so personally and understand that a persons thoughts, feelings, reactions – are really just agreements they’ve made with themselves that often have little to do with me.
It also helped me get clear on my own agreements: the things that help me stay true to who I am, maintain my integrity, wellness, and happiness.
